As the centerpiece in the 40th anniversary celebration, Queen‘s entire 15-album studio catalog is being reissued in a series of deluxe editions. Every note is being tweaked, every piece of artwork is being cleaned, freshened up and resourced, wherever necessary, with the legendary Bob Ludwig doing the remastering, working from the original source material. The albums will be released in three waves, staggered over the next year, with the first wave—comprising the first five LPs—coming this spring.

Each studio album will be released in a new two-CD edition, the first containing the updated, remastered original LP, the second disc packed with rarities—and we don’t use the term lightly. Some of these gems have never before seen the light of day, even in crappy bootleg form. To cite a particularly fascinating example, five first-album demos recorded at London’s De Lane Lea Studios in December 1971 were pulled from the only existing copy on the planet—an acetate from May’s personal archives. Not even his bandmates had a copy.

“A huge amount of work has already been put in behind the scenes to unleash a completely newly mastered set of the original Queen LPs and CDs,” May noted. “I know our fans will appreciate the attention to detail, bringing the early albums closer than ever to the magic of the vinyl originals, but with the benefit of up-to-the-minute quality technology.”

In other anniversary activity, the gallery exhibition “Stormtroopers in Stilettos” opens in London on Feb. 25, with plans in place to tour the exhibit around the world. According to May, this unprecedented event “will highlight in some innovative ways the growth of the ‘Early Queen.’” On April 12, Hollywood will reissue Queen’s debut single, “Keep Yourself Alive” b/w “Son and Daughter,” on seven-inch vinyl in a limited edition coinciding with Record Store Day. And on April 19, the label will issue the band’s Greatest Hits II for the first time in North America. This classic collection includes the rock standards “Under Pressure” and “Radio Ga Ga,” plus  many other classics from the second half of Queen’s run, including the worldwide smashes “I Want It All” & “Innuendo.” Additionally, the “Queen on Vinyl” reissue program will be completed this year with the release of the final five studio albums.

In the UK, Queen’s Greatest Hits 1 holds the record of being the biggest selling album of all time ahead of albums by The Beatles, Oasis, Dire Straits, and Abba.

This is just the beginning of what promises to be a treasure trove of must-have pieces for Queen fans. More will be revealed in the coming months, so stay tuned.

Friday, November 26th:

Settle in for a treat as VH1, VH1 Classic, and Palladia simulcast the world television premiere of the “VH1 Rock Doc: Shine A Light” at 9PM*. The 2008 documentary directed by Martin Scorsese, documents The Rolling Stones’ 2006 Beacon Theater performance in New York City on their “A Bigger Bang Tour.” The documentary includes archive footage from the band’s career and also shows Jack White, Buddy Guy and Christina Aguilera performing with The Rolling Stones.

Harmonix and MTV Games announced that the legendary music of The Doors will be the first available for download in Rock Band 3 when the game launches Oct. 26 in North America and Oct. 29 in the rest of the world for the Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 , Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS, and MTV Games and Harmonix are giving away three of The Doors’ songs for one week to any fan that purchases Rock Band 3 and plays online to celebrate the release of the game.

On Oct. 26, twelve of The Doors’ most-loved songs, including three tracks with the Pro Guitar and Pro Bass feature, will be added to the Rock Band 3 Music Store of downloadable content for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 system and Wii. It was previously announced that The Doors’ quintessential song, “Break On Through (To the Other Side)” is featured in the on-disc soundtrack of Rock Band 3 and is also the soundtrack for the game’s opening cinematic clip.

A three-pack of songs that feature Pro Guitar and Pro Bass upgrade downloads will be available for free to fans that purchase Rock Band 3 and play online during the first week the game is available (Oct. 26 – Nov. 1). The free pack, which is available only through the Rock Band 3 in-game Music Store, includes “Light My Fire,” “Riders on the Storm” and “Touch Me,” which incorporate five-button guitar and bass, Drums, Pro Drums and Keys, Pro Keys and harmonies, where applicable, as well as a free expansion that will add Pro Guitar and Pro Bass parts.

Additionally, a nine-pack of songs from The Doors will also be available for download that week. This includes some of the classic rockers’ most-loved songs, like “Hello, I Love You,” “L.A. Woman,” “Love Her Madly” and “Roadhouse Blues,” all featuring Drums, Pro Drums, five-button guitar and bass parts and, where applicable, harmonies and Keys/Pro Keys parts. Beginning Nov. 2, The Doors’ Rock Band downloads will be available for purchase only as individual songs or in a bundle of all 12 songs.

As noted above, on Nov. 22, The Doors – Live In Vancouver, a two-disc set of previously unreleased live recordings from June 6, 1970, at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, British Columbia, will be released by Rhino and Bright Midnight Archives. The set features a guest performance by Albert King on four songs and includes “When The Music’s Over,” “Five To One,” an extended version of “Light My Fire” and much more from this historic performance. Suggested pricing is $19.98 (CD) and $13.99 (digital).

Hosted by Carrie Keagan, 15 “average Joe” musicians from a variety of backgrounds and cities will go through a transformative process of becoming true rock stars at “Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy Camp.” Broken into three groups of five, each group will be assigned a rock star counselor (Rudy Sarzo, Kip Winger and Mark Hudson) who will give tough love and guidance to the wannabe rockers, transforming the weak campers from quiet nice guys to loud rockin’ front men.

For one week these professional football players, mechanics and realtors will form bands, rehearse and learn the ropes from other rock gods who drop by including Ace Frehley, Michael Anthony, Bret Michaels and many more. With the music know-how, fresh looks and rock star swagger in place, these transformed musicians will take the stage performing before a live audience and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Fans will pick the best band, giving them an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform with a legendary rock artist. Only a true rock star can survive “Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy Camp.” Campers on the series include:
