Rufus and Chaka Khan perform “Stompin’ at the Savoy” and “Seal in Red”
Rufus and Chaka Khan are making a comeback with the reissue of their final two recordings, “Stompin’ at the Savoy” and “Seal in Red.” Back in 1983, Rufus bid farewell after achieving significant success, including a platinum album and numerous gold albums, while also propelling Chaka Khan into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite facing challenges offstage, the group, from Chicago, left a lasting impact on the funk scene in the 70s and 80s. They managed to secure a notable position on the Billboard charts, with all 11 of their albums making it to the top 50, often even charting on the pop charts without the presence of Chaka Khan.
To mark the pivotal year of 1983, the U.K. label Robinsongs is reissuing Rufus’ last studio album, “Seal in Red,” and their final performance with Chaka Khan on “Stompin’ at The Savoy – Live.” The live album features hits like “Tell Me Something Good,” “Do You Love What You Feel,” and more. Additionally, a bonus track, “Ain’t Nobody,” from the recording studio adds to the excitement as one of their most iconic songs.
“Seal in Red” showcases the talents of guitarist Tony Maiden, keyboardists Kevin Murphy and David ‘Hawk’ Wolinski, bassist Bobby Watson, and drummer John “J.R.” Robinson. With guest vocalists Ivan Neville and Patti Austin, and under the production of music legend George Duke, the lone single from the album, “Take It to The Top,” secured a spot on the Top 50 chart.
Fans can expect the reissue of “Stompin’ at the Savoy” and “Seal in Red” to be released as a 2 CD set on March 14th, allowing them to relive the magic of Rufus and Chaka Khan’s final recordings. So mark your calendars and get ready to groove to the timeless tunes of this legendary duo once again.
