Sublime to release first new album in almost 30 years featuring Jakob Nowell
A much-anticipated reunion is in the works for fans of the iconic ‘90s ska-punk band Sublime, as they are currently working on their first new album in nearly three decades. The band, known for hits like “What I Got,” “Santeria,” and “Wrong Way,” is back in the studio with original members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, along with Jakob Nowell, the son of late lead singer Bradley Nowell.
Jakob Nowell, who at 29 years old has already made a name for himself in the music industry with past projects like LAW and Jakob’s Castle, has taken on the role of lead singer for Sublime. Reflecting on this new chapter for the band, Jakob expressed his excitement about exploring and honoring his father’s musical legacy through this upcoming album.
The collaboration on this new project included a creative session with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and producer John Feldmann. Together, they worked on crafting both brand-new songs that pay tribute to the group’s original sound, as well as revisiting and expanding on Bradley Nowell’s unfinished ideas and demo recordings. Barker himself expressed deep admiration for Jakob’s ability to channel his father’s spirit through his singing and guitar playing.
Sublime’s distinctive blend of genres like punk, ska, reggae, hip-hop, and alternative rock captured the hearts of music listeners worldwide throughout the ‘90s. Despite Bradley Nowell’s tragic passing in 1996 due to a heroin overdose, the band’s music continued to resonate with fans, leading to various posthumous releases such as live recordings, rarities, and remixes. Notably, one of Bradley’s vocal samples was featured in the 2001 song “Sunny Hours” by Long Beach Dub Allstars and will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas.
While Sublime With Rome carried on the group’s legacy with new music after Bradley’s death, this upcoming album marks the first time new material will be released under the original band name since their 1996 self-titled album. Additionally, anticipation is building for a Sublime biopic currently in development, with actor KJ Apa set to portray Bradley Nowell. The film, to be written and directed by Justin Chon, is expected to delve into the band’s history and Bradley’s enduring influence on music.
As fans eagerly await further details on the release date of the new album and the debut of the biopic, it’s clear that Sublime’s legacy continues to resonate with audiences old and new. The forthcoming album promises to be a heartfelt tribute to the band’s roots while also celebrating the enduring impact of their music in the decades since their rise to fame.
