Pulp announces first album in 24 years
Pulp, renowned for their distinctive indie pop sound and led by the charismatic singer Jarvis Cocker, recently made waves with the announcement of their upcoming album release. Entitled “More,” the album marks their first musical endeavor in 24 years, following their last album, “We Love Life,” which was released in 2001. The much-anticipated album promises to captivate audiences with a fresh collection of songs that embody the essence of Pulp’s iconic style.
In a recent statement, Cocker revealed the inspiration behind the album, describing how the band stumbled upon the creative spark for “More” during their 2023 tour. While on the road, they experimented with a new song named “Hymn of the North,” which eventually culminated in the birth of the album’s tracks during the early months of 2024. Some of the songs on “More” are reincarnations of ideas that had been brewing since the previous century, showcasing Pulp’s enduring ability to innovate and reinvent their music.
Known for their pioneering role in the ‘90s Britpop wave alongside bands like Oasis, Pulp achieved widespread acclaim with hits such as “Common People,” “Disco 2000,” and “Babies.” Their distinctive sound, characterized by witty lyrics and infectious melodies, cemented their status as musical trailblazers during that era. After a hiatus from 2001 to 2011, Pulp briefly reunited in 2013 to release the single “After You,” before embarking on a reunion tour in 2023.
The recording process for “More” was swift yet focused, with Pulp laying down tracks over a three-week period in London during November. This efficient recording schedule, described by Cocker as the shortest in the band’s history, was a testament to their readiness and creative cohesion. The album will feature contributions from talented musicians such as Richard Hawley and Jason Buckle, as well as backing vocals by the Eno family and string arrangements by Richard Jones and the Elysian Collective.
As a tribute to their late bassist Steve Mackey, who passed away in 2023, Pulp dedicated the album to his memory. Cocker expressed his sentiments about the new album, emphasizing the band’s dedication to creating music that resonates authentically with their audience. He reassured fans that “More” was crafted without the intervention of artificial intelligence, emphasizing the band’s commitment to producing music that is heartfelt and genuine.
Looking ahead, Pulp is gearing up for a series of concert performances in the UK this summer, followed by two highly-anticipated shows in Los Angeles at the iconic Hollywood Bowl with LCD Soundsystem in September. With tickets available through various platforms, fans can look forward to experiencing Pulp’s electrifying live performances and the enchanting sounds of “More” firsthand. As Pulp prepares to make their musical comeback, fans can anticipate an exciting chapter in the band’s storied career, brimming with creativity and passion.
