“Pulp returns with new single ‘Spike Island’ after 24-year album hiatus”
Pulp announced the release of their upcoming album, More, set to drop on June 6 via Rough Trade Records. This marks the band’s first album in almost 24 years and includes the lead single, “Spike Island.”
The British rock group teamed up with producer James Ford for this album, a follow-up to their 2001 release, We Love Life. With 11 tracks, the LP was recorded and mixed at Orbb Studio in East London. Notable collaborators on the album include the Eno family contributing backing vocals to one track, while string arrangements by Richard Jones were performed by the Elysian Collective. Additionally, Richard Hawley and Jason Buckle each lent their music talents to separate songs on the album.
The band took some inspiration from their late former bassist Steve Mackey for More. Pulp’s frontman Jarvis Cocker shared details about the album, expressing the band’s excitement for this release after a long hiatus. He discussed the rapid process of creating the album, noting that song ideas flowed freely during their 2023 tour. The music-making journey led them to record the album in just three weeks at James Ford’s studio in Walthamstow, London. Cocker also highlighted that this album marks a significant milestone in their discography, as it was crafted entirely by a team of dedicated musicians without any artificial intelligence involvement.
One of the tracks featured on More is “Spike Island,” co-written by Jason Buckle. Along with the announcement of the single, an official music video was released to accompany it. The tracklist for More includes songs like “Tina,” “My Sex,” “Partial Eclipse,” and “A Sunset,” showcasing the band’s iconic sound and lyrical depth.
With the dedication of More to Steve Mackey, Pulp pays homage to their late bandmate’s legacy and influence on their music. Their commitment to creating authentic and heartfelt music shines through in this forthcoming album. Fans of Pulp can expect a blend of nostalgia, innovation, and raw emotion in More, which promises to be a powerful addition to the band’s celebrated discography.
