Pulp to Release First Album in 24 Years, Titled ‘More’
After a lengthy hiatus, the iconic Sheffield band Pulp has officially announced the release of their first album in 24 years, titled ‘More’. Scheduled to be available on June 6th through Rough Trade Records, the news was accompanied by the unveiling of the lead single ‘Spike Island’, a musical journey enriched with synthesizers, strings, and slide guitar. Additionally, a new music video for the song has been released, showcasing their blend of nostalgia and innovative sounds.
This upcoming album marks Pulp’s return to the music scene since their last full-length release, ‘We Love Life’, back in 2001. Frontman Jarvis Cocker revealed that the idea for a new album sparked during the band’s reunion tour in 2023. A new song, ‘Hymn of the North’, made its way into their setlist in Sheffield, igniting the creative process that led to the creation of most of the tracks on ‘More’ throughout the first half of 2024.
While the album contains fresh material, it also incorporates reimagined ideas from the 90s era. Collaborators like Richard Hawley and Jason Buckle contributed to the music, while the string arrangements were skillfully crafted by Richard Jones and the Elysian Collective. Furthermore, a vocal appearance from the Eno family adds a touch of familiarity and warmth to the album, reflecting a sense of camaraderie with long-time partners in creativity.
Recording of ‘More’ took place within a brief three-week period in Walthamstow, starting on November 18th. Despite being the shortest album session in Pulp’s history, frontman Cocker affirmed that it was a deliberate decision, stating, “This is the best that we can do. Thanks for listening.” The album carries a dedication to the band’s late bassist, Steve Mackey, honoring his memory and contributions to their musical journey.
With the release of ‘Spike Island’, the anticipation for the new album has been set high, promising a quintessential Pulp experience – a blend of the familiar, the eccentric, and a distinctive rhythm that defines their signature style. Fans eagerly await the arrival of ‘More’ on June 6th, acknowledging the bittersweet wait after decades of longing for new music from the British music legends.
