Martindale’s impact went beyond being a familiar face on TV; he had a unique ability to connect with audiences and make them feel part of the show. Whether it was the thrill of “Tic-Tac-Dough,” the fun of “Headline Chasers,” or the energetic atmosphere of “High Rollers,” each show left a lasting impression on viewers. However, it was “Gambit” that truly captivated audiences. Born Winston Conrad Martindale on December 4, 1933, in Jackson, Tennessee, Martindale’s broadcasting career began at a young age. At 17, he worked as a disc jockey, earning $25 a week at WPLI in his hometown. Explaining the origin of his famous nickname, Martindale recounted a childhood friend, Jimmy McCord, who couldn’t pronounce “Winston” due to a speech impediment, leading to the nickname “Winky” which eventually evolved into “Wink.”

Martindale’s transition from radio to television was seamless, starting with hosting “Mars Patrol,” a sci-fi children’s show on WHBQ-TV. It became evident that Martindale was destined for showbiz, showcasing his talent both behind the microphone and in front of the camera. In 1972, he landed his big break as the host of the CBS game show “Gambit,” a role he held for four successful years.

Beyond his game show success, Martindale shared a deep friendship with rock ‘n’ roll icon Elvis Presley. Their friendship intertwined Martindale with significant moments in music history, underscoring his diverse impact and connections across entertainment realms.
