Civil rights attorney Ben Crump provided updates in the case of Shanquella Robinson, a Charlotte woman who tragically passed away while on a trip to Mexico. The attorney shared the news during a press conference in Greensboro, North Carolina on April 17, 2025. During the conference, Crump announced the filing of a new lawsuit amounting to $100 million in Robinson’s case.

The purpose of the conference was to shed light on the latest developments in Robinson’s case. While specific details were not immediately disclosed, Crump also intended to delve into other cases concerning North Carolina, including the Fred Cox case from High Point and the Tyrone Mason case from Raleigh. Reverend Jamal Bryant, known for organizing a boycott of Target over its DEI initiatives, was also present at the conference.

Shanquella Robinson’s life was cut short in 2022 while she was vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with a group of friends. Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Robinson’s untimely demise prompted an investigation by the FBI. In February 2025, the agency released a partly redacted report outlining the events leading to Robinson’s death while in Mexico.

According to the report, Shanquella and her companions had traveled to Mexico to celebrate a birthday. They had utilized an Airbnb for accommodation. Further details indicated that Robinson had a mishap in which she allegedly hit her head on the toilet while inebriated. Remarks from the group mentioned that a member tried to retrieve surveillance footage by mistakenly assuming there were cameras in the house, prompting them to contact local law enforcement.

Reports revealed injuries on Robinson’s body consistent with being physically assaulted, with mentions of bruises that gave the impression she had been subjected to violence. Initially, Robinson’s family was told that she succumbed to alcohol poisoning. However, Mexican authorities later cited a severe spinal cord injury as the official cause of death on her death certificate, contradicting the initial reports of alcohol poisoning.

Subsequent investigations, including an autopsy conducted in Charlotte, disputed the previous claims. Contrary to Mexican authorities’ statements indicating a broken spine, the autopsy revealed no such injury. The examiner’s findings attributed Shanquella Robinson’s demise to an undetermined cause, listing hematoma of the forehead, mild cerebral edema, and hypoxic-ischemic brain injury as significant factors.

Despite circulating footage of Robinson in a conflict with a friend, no charges have been filed. The video, showing a violent encounter within a hotel room, surfaced post-Robinson’s death, leading her family to assert claims of her being physically assaulted.

The fight for justice and uncovering the truth behind Shanquella Robinson’s tragic passing remained ongoing, marked by the legal actions and investigations initiated by civil rights attorney Ben Crump. The conference served as a platform for raising awareness of Robinson’s case and demanding accountability for her untimely death.
