The summer season heralds warm weather and thoughts of beach trips along the Jersey Shore, accompanied by a soundtrack that captures those coastal vibes. Enter the newest album from Philadelphia indie rock band The Tisburys, “A Still Life Revisited,” released last Friday.

This album is a homage to both present-day Philadelphia icons like Kurt Vile and legendary Jersey Shore figures like Bruce Springsteen, blending the essence of both worlds. Tyler Asay, the band’s songwriter and frontman, describes the album as a journey through a “darker nostalgia” that reflects on family history while embracing the present.

Turning 30 and getting married prompted Asay to contemplate his life’s timeline, drawing parallels with his parents’ experiences at a similar stage. These reflections are prominently present in tracks like the title song and “Elephant Hotel,” where Lucy the Elephant, a beloved Margate landmark, is referenced. The album’s cover art also showcases a stunning depiction of the iconic 65-foot-tall structure.

The Tisburys, led by Asay and guitarist John Domenico, trace their musical beginnings back to their hometown of Scranton, where they started playing together in high school. After pursuing separate paths in college, the duo reunited in Philadelphia in 2016. Their collaboration expanded to include keyboardist Jason McGovern, drummer Dan Nazario, and bassist Ben Cardine.

In crafting the soundscape of their latest album, Asay drew inspiration from the influences of the Jersey Shore and the East Coast, infusing their music with the region’s blue-collar grit and folk songwriting aesthetic. Their upcoming performance alongside Neon Trees in Asbury Park at the Stone Pony, a venue steeped in Springsteen history, promises to be a memorable event.

For those seeking a touch of Philly in their music experience, The Tisburys’ June 7 concert at Milkboy, presented by WXPN, offers a local flavor to complement their Jersey Shore-inspired sounds. The band recently released a video for the opening track, “By a Landslide,” further enhancing the album’s visual and auditory appeal.

“A Still Life Revisited” is available for streaming on Spotify or for purchase in digital, CD, or vinyl format on Bandcamp. Fans looking to immerse themselves in a blend of indie rock with nostalgic undertones can indulge in The Tisburys’ latest musical offering, a heartfelt fusion of Philadelphia and Jersey Shore influences.

Listeners can look forward to an album that not only pays tribute to the band’s musical roots but also serves as a soundtrack for laid-back summer days and contemplative evenings, capturing the essence of nostalgia and the vibrancy of the present moment in equal measure.
