Punk rock and reptiles seem to have an unlikely connection, with bands like The Jesus Lizard and Dead Milkmen’s album “Big Lizard In My Backyard” being prime examples of the fusion of these two worlds.

Patrick Kamberos, or “Pat D Waggon,” has a deep-rooted affinity for reptiles, amphibians, and other exotic creatures. Alongside his friends Michael and Shay Edelen, both fellow Chicago natives, he operates Cold Blooded & Bizarre in Charlotte, NC.

While Patrick dedicates his time to the business in Charlotte, he frequently returns to Chicago to connect with his punk music roots and catch up with friends and family in the scene. His importance in the community is evidenced by the birthday wishes displayed on Wiener’s Circle marquee by Herb Rosen and Gary Kessler from Liar’s Club for his 40th birthday earlier this year.

In a recent conversation with Kamberos, we explored his journey into the world of exotic creatures and how his childhood experiences with nature influenced his passion. He credits his parents for fostering his curiosity about the natural world by encouraging outdoor exploration and family road trips to various states. Despite their lack of personal interest in cold-blooded creatures, they supported his fascination and even went the extra mile by taking him on nighttime expeditions to hunt insects and other creatures drawn to bright lights.

Additionally, Patrick’s beloved uncle, Daniel J. Murray, played a significant role in nurturing his love for nature and wildlife through family trips and birdwatching adventures. His uncle’s influence helped shape his admiration for the intricate ecosystems these creatures inhabit.

The genesis of their store, Cold Blooded & Bizarre, and subsequent nonprofit organization stemmed from Mike Edelen’s vision after his wife suggested exploring animal-related business opportunities. Patrick, being at a transitional phase in his life, readily embraced the idea of an ethical reptile venture.

The store initially aimed to handle occasional animal surrenders or rescues but quickly evolved into a mission-driven space for animal welfare. By establishing a nonprofit arm, they solidified their commitment to caring for rescue and relinquished animals.

Reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates hold a special place in Patrick’s heart for their strange yet captivating uniqueness, akin to the punk scene’s unconventional charm. These creatures offer a gateway to appreciating the natural world beyond familiar surroundings, emphasizing conservation and the interconnectedness of all living beings.

Notably, all animals at Cold Blooded & Bizarre originate from captive breeding programs, ensuring sustainable practices and preserving natural ecosystems. Through collaboration with local breeders and enthusiasts, they promote responsible pet ownership and wildlife conservation.

Cold-blooded creatures make ideal pets due to their low maintenance needs, non-destructive behavior, and educational value. From snakes requiring minimal feeding to bioactive tank setups mimicking natural habitats, these exotic pets offer a window into the intricacies of the animal kingdom.

In the broader ecosystem, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates play crucial roles in maintaining balance and diversity. As integral parts of the food chain, these creatures regulate populations, contribute to biodiversity, and serve as prey for various species, underscoring their significance in sustaining healthy ecosystems.

Dispelling myths and misconceptions surrounding reptiles, Patrick addresses common fears associated with snakes, emphasizing their docile nature and the importance of peaceful coexistence. By educating the public about these misunderstood creatures, Cold Blooded & Bizarre aims to foster respect and appreciation for the lesser-known species that inhabit our planet.
