Divide and Dissolve, a doom metal band led by the Black and Cherokee composer and multi-instrumentalist Takiaya Reed, recently dropped their latest album, “Insatiable,” which was released on April 18 via Bella Union.

The album title, “Insatiable,” originated from a dream experienced by Takiaya. In her vision, she saw a world where people engaged in either great acts of harm or great acts of love. For her, being “insatiable” means choosing between destruction and compassion and fully experiencing the consequences of that choice. She believes that in the current climate, it is crucial for individuals to grasp the concept of love more deeply than ever before.

Takiaya showcased her more introspective side by contributing vocals to the first D//D song, “Grief.” On their latest single, “Withholding,” the band’s deep doom metal sound takes center stage. According to Takiaya, “Withholding” explores the space where change is tangible on various levels – material, spiritual, emotional, and physical. The song delves into the dynamics between push and pull.

Divide and Dissolve’s music serves as a recognition of the dispossession resulting from colonial violence, an ode to ancestors, a stance against white supremacy, and a call for indigenous sovereignty. Already established as legends in the international doom metal realm, the band’s latest offering represents a progression in sound and complexity. Packed with crashing cymbals, gritty feedback, gut-wrenching riffs, and elements of neo-classical music, the album discusses the concept of freedom through impermanence and the dichotomy of destruction versus compassion. It serves as an urgent plea to envision a better world before it’s too late. Listeners are encouraged to engage with the music, internalize its message, and cultivate an insatiable thirst for change.

Ultimately, Divide and Dissolve’s “Insatiable” stands as a testament to the band’s evolution and their unwavering commitment to addressing pressing social and political issues through their music. Through their powerful compositions, they advocate for social justice, resistance against oppression, and the pursuit of a more equitable world for all.
