Cole Haden from Model/Actriz discusses their latest album, Pirouette
Cole Haden, the frontman of Model/Actriz, a budding band from Brooklyn, epitomizes the ideal indie rock leader. Known for his enigmatic stage presence and inventive music, Haden is making waves with their latest album, Pirouette.
Haden’s live performances are a spectacle to behold. Drawing inspiration from artists like Marina Abramović, his confrontational and interactive style captivates audiences. At a recent gig at Night Club 101 in Manhattan, Haden’s intense gaze and sultry singing in songs like “Doves” created an electrifying atmosphere. While his engaging stage presence may be discomfiting for some, it is an integral part of the Model/Actriz experience.
The band’s journey began in 2016 at Berklee College of Music in Boston when Haden caught the eye of drummer Ruben Radlauer and guitarist Jack Wetmore with his raw performance style. Bassist Aaron Shapiro completed the quartet in 2019, and the band soon gained a following with their debut album, Dogsbody. Their new release, Pirouette, continues the tradition of edgy noise rock but delves into more personal and vulnerable territory.
Pirouette showcases Haden’s growth as an artist. Departing from the abstract metaphors of their previous work, the album reveals more of Haden’s inner world. Songs like “Diva” and “Cinderella” offer insights into his relationships, childhood memories, and identity. The track “Baton” pays homage to his sisters, while “Acid Rain” honors his grandmother. Throughout the album, Haden weaves a narrative that is both introspective and relatable.
Reflecting on his past, Haden acknowledges the struggles and loneliness he felt growing up. Finding solace in artists like Lady Gaga, he embraced his sexuality and began his journey to self-acceptance. Influenced by pop divas like Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue, Haden infuses his music with a dance-pop sensibility that sets Model/Actriz apart.
Performing with Model/Actriz is a physically demanding experience. Haden’s vocal cords often bear the brunt of his impassioned singing, while guitarist Jack has endured bruising from intense performances. Despite the challenges, the band’s commitment to their craft remains unwavering.
Pirouette is a testament to Model/Actriz’s evolution as a band. From their electrifying live shows to their introspective lyrics and innovative sound, they continue to push boundaries and captivate audiences. With an upcoming tour across the US and Europe, the band’s future looks bright as they solidify their position as one of indie rock’s most exciting new acts.
