Kelly Clarkson recently revealed the unexpected inspiration behind her latest single, “Where Have You Been,” which she debuted a day early on her SiriusXM channel. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter drew creative influence from the love story between Oliver Putman (played by Martin Short) and Loretta Dunkin (portrayed by Meryl Streep) in the popular Hulu series, Only Murders in the Building.

During the introduction to her new track, Clarkson shared how a particular scene featuring Martin Short’s character captivated her. In the scene, Short’s character asks Streep’s character, “Where have you been?” The singer found this moment so enchanting that she felt compelled to turn it into a joyful and upbeat song.

The on-screen romance between Short and Streep continued to evolve, culminating in a wedding ceremony in the Arconia courtyard at the end of the show’s fourth season. With production on the fifth season underway, the series, also starring Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, remains a fan favorite.

Clarkson’s admiration for Only Murders in the Building is well-documented. She has previously expressed a desire to make a cameo appearance on the show and even collaborated with Martin Short on a track for her 10th studio album, Chemistry. In the song “I Hate Love,” Martin showcases his banjo skills, adding a unique touch to the music.

The lyrics to “Where Have You Been” also include a nod to Martin’s role in the 2009 romantic comedy It’s Complicated, where Streep also starred. Clarkson’s reference showcases her attention to detail and her ability to incorporate personal touches into her music.

In a past interview with Billboard, Clarkson shared how Martin immediately embraced the idea of collaborating on a song. She expressed her surprise at his quick and enthusiastic response, highlighting his eagerness to be part of the creative process.

“Where Have You Been” is set to make its global debut on May 2, offering fans around the world the opportunity to experience Clarkson’s musical tribute to the enchanting love story that captivated her on Only Murders in the Building.
