Boys set to release exciting new album
Kalamazoo blues band, Out of Favor Boys, has been making music for over two decades, perfecting their unique blend of contemporary blues infused with elements of funk, soul, and rock. However, their focus on songwriting has truly become the cornerstone of their artistic approach. Guitarist Dan Ouellette emphasized the significance of their participation in the Chili Pepper Songwriting Group, where they received mentorship and guidance that propelled them towards finding their musical voice and helped them grow as artists.
Their latest studio album, “Love & Sorrow,” which took two and a half years to complete, features 11 original tracks that delve into various aspects of life, reflecting on the experiences and lessons learned in recent years. The band, comprising Dan Ouellette, Tony Sproul, Joel Krauss, Tim Brouhard, and Tommy Ufkus, plans to launch the album with a live performance at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Café on May 9, promising an evening filled with captivating music and special guests.
Despite a few lineup changes over the years, Out of Favor Boys have stayed true to their roots while exploring new sounds. While they derive inspiration from blues legends like Muddy Waters and B.B. King, they also draw from contemporary artists such as Tommy Castro, Tab Benoit, and Eric Clapton to create a fresh and relevant sound that pushes the boundaries of traditional blues music. Sproul emphasized their commitment to evolving the genre and contributing to its growth rather than replicating past styles.
Recorded at La Luna Recording and Sound in Kalamazoo, the album showcases a deeper exploration of their songwriting abilities and a willingness to experiment with different genres beyond the confines of strict blues. According to Sproul, the extended recording process allowed them to delve deeper into the songs, imbuing them with greater emotional depth and complexity.
Following the album release, Out of Favor Boys have a packed summer schedule of performances lined up, including shows at O’Duffy’s Pub, Bourbon, Bacon, and Blues, and Kalamazoo’s Beats on Bates series. The band’s extensive experience and love for performing live have shaped their dynamic stage presence, creating an electrifying atmosphere that keeps audiences engaged and entertained.
