Lorde has made a triumphant return to the music scene with the release of her new single, “What Was That,” accompanied by an intriguing music video. This marks her first solo venture in four years and her first musical endeavor since her 2021 album, Solar Power. In the interim, she had also treated her fans to a cover of Talking Heads and a collaboration with Charli XCX on the track “Girl, so confusing,” which they recently performed together at Coachella.

The latest song is part of Lorde’s highly awaited upcoming album, Virgin, scheduled for release on June 27th. This album will be her first full-length project in four years. Lorde, who is 28 years old, announced the upcoming album on Instagram, showcasing the album cover, which depicts what seems to be a pelvic X-Ray with a zipper running down the center. Collaborating on this album, Lorde worked with Jim-E Stack, Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, Buddy Ross, Dan Nigro, and Dev Hynes from Blood Orange.

Prior to the release of the single, Lorde had teased her new music on Instagram with the cover art of the single. The image captured by photographer Talia Chetrit portrays Lorde in a bright red t-shirt with her hair styled in double braids, staring directly at the camera as water trickles down her face. She gave a glimpse of “What Was That” on TikTok, her first post on the platform, where she shared a video of herself strolling through Washington Square Park in New York City. In a message to her fans, she teased her imminent return to the music scene after the launch of her previous album, Solar Power, saying, “I just wanted to say hi because everything is about to change. These are the last moments where it’s just us, which is crazy. But so right. I’m so ready.”

Lorde premiered “What Was That” live at Washington Square Park in New York, playing the song on a small speaker. Footage from this event is integrated into the captivating new music video for the track, which Lorde co-wrote with Jim-E Stack and co-produced with Jim-E Stack and Daniel Nigro.

Overall, this exciting return marks a significant moment for Lorde’s fans and the music industry as a whole. With her distinctive sound and innovative approach, Lorde continues to push boundaries and captivate audiences worldwide.
