This powerful song was born out of Apple’s experience as a court-watcher in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where she witnessed numerous bond hearings and individuals being incarcerated simply because they couldn’t afford bail.
In her own words, Apple expressed her motivation behind the song, stating, “I was a court watcher for over two years. In that time, I took notes on thousands of bond hearings. Time and time again, I listened as people were taken away and put in jail, for no other reason than that they couldn’t afford to buy their way free.” She highlighted the heart-wrenching reality of mothers and caregivers being separated from their loved ones who rely on them for support.
The song “Pretrial (Let Her Go Home)” was a collaborative effort produced by Zealous and Special Operations Studios and created in support of the Free Black Mamas Dmv initiative. Apple’s poignant lyrics and soulful delivery draw attention to the systemic injustices within the current bail system, urging listeners to reflect on the profound impact it has on marginalized communities, particularly Black women.
