During the era of Ronald Reagan, if you frequented the live music scene in Worcester and were of legal drinking age, chances are you were familiar with the Hartwell brothers. Doug Hartwell Jr., Dave Hartwell, and Dan “Danimal” Hartwell were synonymous with the music scene in the ’80s, much like the Bee Gees were on the international stage. While the Bee Gees had people grooving in discotheques and nightclubs, the Hartwell brothers, each playing in various bands, dominated the local dive bar scene.

Doug Hartwell, a talented guitarist, fronted the Boston-based band Hartwell and was an essential member of Worcester bands like the Heartbeats and the Lynch Mob. Dave Hartwell, on drums, lent a powerful beat to popular local groups such as We & Mrs. Jones, Jubilee Gardens, Little Big Wheel, and the Furies. Danimal, with his teased hair and tight spandex, was a charismatic singer who led several glam bands in the ’80s, including Danimal’s Animals, Life with Danimal, Danimal’s Glow-in-the-Dark Vampires, the Noizy Boyz, and Cracked Actor.
Despite their success in the ’80s, the Hartwell brothers parted ways musically for many years. However, on May 17, a special occasion brought them back together to perform for the first time in nearly 33 years. This musical reunion marked “A Celebration of Life,” dedicated to their late father, Douglas C. Hartwell Sr., who passed away on September 25. The emotional event not only showcased the sibling bond through music but also featured a spectacular gastronomic treat – their sister’s homemade meatballs.

Doug, Dave, and Dan Hartwell treated the audience to a memorable set, beginning with Doug’s soulful rendition of his father’s favorite songs, Hank Williams’ “Hey, Good Lookin’” and the Beatles’ “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Following Doug’s lead, the trio performed together for the first time since 1992. Danimal took center stage, belting out two classic Elvis tunes, “Hound Dog” and “Heartbreak Hotel” (renamed “Hartwell Hotel”), before delivering a powerful rendition of Alice Cooper’s “No More Mr. Nice Guy.” The set concluded with Dave stepping out from behind his drumkit to perform “Piggie Wiggle,” a nostalgic tune penned by their late father.

Nervous but determined, Dave Hartwell revealed that singing in front of a live audience was a first for him. The crowd’s enthusiastic response was evidence of his undeniable talent, and his vocal debut was met with overwhelming approval. The brothers’ musical journey is far from over, as they plan to immortalize “Piggie Wiggle” by recording it at Wachusett Recording with studio expert Roger Lavaillee.

The musical ensemble was completed by Charlie Hartwell, Doug Jr.’s son, on bass, and John Papas on guitar. Joining Danimal on backing vocals was his “life partner” Kerri Smith, while Jimmy Boscarino filled in on drums for Dave Hartwell’s vocal performance. The harmonious reunion was a touching tribute to their father’s memory, emphasizing the importance of family and unity through music.

Reflecting on the experience, the Hartwell brothers expressed gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect through music and honor their father’s legacy. Despite the passage of time, the familial bond and shared love for music remain unbreakable. This event served as a poignant reminder of their parents’ teachings to cherish each other and continue supporting one another, fostering a sense of unity and love. The Hartwell brothers’ musical reunion in Worcester was more than just a performance; it was a heartfelt celebration of family, music, and cherished memories.
