See Foxy Shazam, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, and Lobby Boxer perform at The ’58
Exploding onto the scene more than twenty years ago in the heart of Cincinnati, Ohio, Foxy Shazam quickly became known as a band that continually pushed the boundaries of the rock genre. Originating from the hardcore and metal scene, their initial album, 2005’s The Flamingo Trigger, immediately captured a devoted fanbase, propelling them to cult-classic status over the years. Subsequent to signing with Ferret Music, the band transitioned to increasingly experimental and daring territory marked by genre-blurring influences and polished production with the release of 2008’s Introducing Foxy Shazam.
Reaching the pinnacle of mainstream success in 2010 with their eponymous major label debut, they achieved a significant breakthrough as they embraced a more glam, operatic, and retro-inspired rock aesthetic that solidified their identity. This flamboyant style was further honed with 2012’s The Church of Rock and Roll, emphasizing their dramatic and theatrical live performances. Transitioning back to an independent status in 2014 with Gonzo, their final album before a hiatus, Foxy Shazam shifted towards a more raw alt-rock sound through a collaborative process with renowned producer Steve Albini.
Following their disbandment in 2014, the individual members embarked on separate ventures. Frontman Eric Nally gained widespread recognition for his work with Macklemore and a well-received solo release, while the remaining band members delved into diverse musical projects. The announcement of Foxy Shazam’s impending return in 2020 was met with eager anticipation, with the first show postponed into early 2021 due to extenuating circumstances. Their comeback signaled a evolved lineup featuring a mix of veteran and new members, revitalizing their presence with a fresh perspective. In recent years, the band has been on a creative streak, unveiling a series of albums including Burn, The Heart Behead You, Dark Blue Night, and the latest release, Animalty Opera.
The revitalized era of Foxy Shazam in their latest albums has been characterized by a return to the soulful, experimental sounds that defined their earlier work, particularly reminiscent of Introducing and Foxy Shazam. Fusing theatricality with boldness and surprise elements, the band’s evolution has resonated with both long-time fans and newcomers alike. Animalty Opera is the latest testament to this stylistic resurgence, embodying the band’s finest traits with an innovative and engaging approach.
