2025 Ronnie James Dio Fundraiser Raises Funds at Autry Park
Fifteen years ago on May 16, 2010, heavy metal lost an iconic figure in Ronnie James Dio due to stomach cancer. Known for his unforgettable voice, symbolized by the devil horns, and his genuine kindness, Dio left an indelible mark on the genre through his work with bands such as Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Dio. Since then, the Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund has diligently raised funds and awareness for cancer research, particularly regarding stomach, colon, and prostate cancer, in honor of Dio’s own battle with the disease.
Every year on May 18, music fans gather at The Autry Museum in Los Angeles for the Rock for Ronnie concert, a day filled with rock and roll, auctions, and cancer awareness. The 2025 event was sponsored by Motörhead Whiskey, White Hag Beer, Liquid Death, Celsius, among others, and was hosted by Ahmet Zappa. The lineup featured diverse acts like Anita Squeeze, Jason Charles Miller, Count’s 77, Kill Devil Hill, Dio Disciples, and Sebastian Bach, culminating in an all-star jam session that delighted the attendees.
The music kicked off at 11:30 with local band Anita Squeeze, led by Josh Lewis, delivering high-energy rock to get the crowd going. In between performances, Ahmet Zappa entertained the audience, and Wendy Dio extended a warm welcome to everyone present. Jason Charles Miller took the stage, showcasing his versatility with country and blues-infused rock that revealed his talents beyond his industrial rock roots. Having performed at past Rock for Ronnie events, Miller paid tribute to Dio once again this year.
Next up was Count’s 77, led by Danny “Count” Koker of Counting Cars fame, who effortlessly bridged his talent in music and car restoration with a vibrant set of 70s-style rock. Kill Devil Hill, a group fronted by Dewey Bragg and Mark Zavon, offered a unique blend of heavy metal that resonated with fans, setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
Dio Disciples, featuring former Dio band members and guest vocalists, took the stage to honor the late rock legend with classics from Dio, Rainbow, and Black Sabbath. The band’s rendition of hits like “Rainbow in the Dark” and “Mob Rules” brought the spirit of Dio back to life, uniting the crowd in celebration of his music. With skilled musicians such as Ira Black, Scott Warren, Simon Wright, and vocalists Tim “Ripper” Owens, Patrick Stone, and Gabriel Colon, Dio was remembered through a stellar performance.
Throughout the day, fans had the opportunity to meet band members, visit vendor booths, and enjoy local food trucks, creating a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie and support. Rock for Ronnie 2025 not only celebrated Dio’s legacy but also carried forward his mission of raising awareness and funds for cancer research, ensuring his impact continues to resonate in the world of rock and beyond.
