Mom to perform at Union Transfer this Friday night – Local news outlet
Momma is making their triumphant return to Philadelphia as they conclude the first leg of their summer tour, headlining at Union Transfer. The band, originally from New York, recently dropped their fourth studio album, Welcome To My Blue Sky, just over a month ago. Founders and primary songwriters, Allegra Weingarten and Etta Friedman, shared that the album focuses on the theme of being caught between home life and life on the road, as well as the concept of growing up.
“We’ve found our sound because I think we’re just a lot more confident now, and I think that this record, we truly wrote for ourselves,” Weingarten expressed.
Both artists grew up in California before relocating to New York to pursue their band full-time. Despite the challenges of uprooting across the country, they quickly adapted to the East Coast culture, appreciating the direct and straightforward nature of the people in the area. Friedman noted that people on the East Coast are frank and to the point, which she finds refreshing compared to the more hesitant responses she received in LA.
Building on the success of their previous record, “Household Name,” Momma established a signature sound that resonated with audiences and earned them recognition from Consequence and Paste Magazine. Weingarten reflected on the conscious decision-making process that went into creating their third album, as they aimed to make a big impact with their music. However, with their latest release, they focused solely on creating songs they personally enjoyed without consideration for external feedback.
While Momma started out as a two-person band, they have since expanded their lineup to include drummer Preston Fulks and bassist/producer Aron Kobayashi Ritch. The group recently had the opportunity to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live, marking a significant milestone in their musical journey.
Despite the highs of their success, the band has faced challenges while on tour, including a particularly stressful headlining show in 2022. Weingarten described the experience as a “nightmare night” due to the intense schedule and emotional strain. However, the band’s dedication and strong bond kept them together through the tough times.
As they gear up for their performance at Union Transfer, Momma is excited to connect with the Philly crowd and earn some “Philly street cred.” Friedman emphasized the loyalty and pride that Philadelphians hold for their city and its music scene. With doors opening at 7 p.m. and tickets starting at $39.70, the band is ready to rock the stage alongside opening act, Wishy.
