In Monroe, North Carolina, local police identified the gunman responsible for shooting a female officer during a pursuit on Saturday morning. The suspect, 18-year-old Joshua Hayden Sikes, was shot and killed by the police after a chaotic series of events that unfolded in the early hours of the day.

The incident began around 1:45 a.m. when officers attempted to stop Sikes on Old Charlotte Highway at Rocky River Road. Sikes refused to pull over, leading the officers on a chase. Eventually, stop sticks were deployed at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Goldmine Rock, disabling the suspect’s vehicle. Upon exiting the vehicle, Sikes opened fire on a Monroe police officer, hitting her multiple times. He then fled into the nearby woods, sparking a manhunt.

During a press conference later that morning, Lieutenant Morgan Malone shared a harrowing image of the officer’s cruiser, which was riddled with bullet holes from the gunfire. The wounded officer was rushed to Atrium Health Main and is currently in stable condition. Meanwhile, a massive manhunt was launched to locate Sikes, who was armed and dangerous.

At approximately 3:50 a.m., officers tracked down Sikes in the woods, still in possession of a rifle. When he fired at the officers for a second time, they were forced to return fire, ultimately killing him. The rifle used by the suspect was recovered at the scene, bringing a conclusion to the intense standoff.

Throughout the ordeal, roads in the area were closed to traffic to facilitate the investigation and manhunt. Despite the chaos, law enforcement officials assured the public that there was no longer a threat to safety in the area. The State Bureau of Investigation became involved in the ongoing investigation, but no additional details were released at the time.
