Victory in Rumble boosts Ghouls’ career – Boston Herald
The Ghouls, a dynamic musical group, had their career launched into new heights with a resounding victory at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble. Typically, this revered battle of the bands event in Boston tends to favor seasoned veterans of the music scene. Countless musicians with impressive backgrounds and musical credentials have been recognized, like the artists from recent editions such as One Fall, Set Fire, and Worshipper. However, the Ghouls managed to stand out as a notable exception to this trend after their triumph last year.
Despite feeling initially intimidated by the more established acts who brought elaborate suitcases filled with merchandise and CDs, Ghouls’ singer and guitarist George Danahy reflected on their humble beginnings. With only one song available on Spotify and a cardboard box, the band defied expectations. Just a year ago, all four members of the Ghouls – Danahy, guitarist Peter Trainor, bassist Jacob Babcock, and drummer Bryce Maher, were still completing their music degrees at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
At the 2024 Rumble, the Ghouls captivated the audience with their electrifying live performances, showing off a unique blend of punk rock infused with hints of power pop, metal, and prog. Influenced by iconic figures like Randy Rhodes, Eddie Van Halen, and Brian May, Danahy’s guitar prowess effectively complemented the band’s energetic and raw sound, evident in tracks like “Hellbound,” which seamlessly blends gritty rock with exceptional guitar solos.
Utilizing the studio time they won at the Rumble, the Ghouls worked on their debut album, “Handle With Care,” which perfectly encapsulates their electric stage presence. The band’s celebratory event at the Middle East on June 6 marks the release of this highly-anticipated album. Besides their latest musical endeavor, the past year heralded several accomplishments for the Ghouls, including their Rumble victory, four graduations, two nominations at the Boston Music Awards, and a well-deserved win for Rock Artist of the Year.
Reflecting on this whirlwind journey, Danahy humorously recounted the band’s chaotic scramble to participate in the Rumble, amidst graduation ceremonies and battling COVID-19. Despite the challenges, the Ghouls’ adventurous spirit is mirrored in their music, showcasing a blend of frenetic energy and artistry that has resonated with audiences.
One of the standout moments for the Ghouls occurred during their performance at the Boston Music Awards, where they led an epic singalong of their song “Game” to a diverse crowd at the Big Night Live. Witnessing the crowd unite in song brought a sense of fulfillment to Danahy, underscoring the band’s growing impact on audiences across genres. As they gear up for another exciting year ahead, the Ghouls’ infectious energy and passion for music promise a bright future for this up-and-coming musical sensation.
