GAYC/DC pays tribute to AC/DC and TWISTED SISTER with ‘Gay Boy Boogie’
On their latest release, lead singer Christopher Freeman of GAYC/DC, an all-gay AC/DC tribute band, jokes about pushing the boundaries with their new video “Gay Boy Boogie.” Released at the start of Pride Month in June 2025, this song is a homoerotic rendition of AC/DC’s “Bad Boy Boogie” from the album “Let There Be Rock.” The accompanying video pays homage to TWISTED SISTER’s rebellious track “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”
While the original AC/DC song celebrated heterosexual promiscuity, “Gay Boy Boogie” offers a more risqué and LGBTQ+ perspective. Freeman, who is also a member of queercore pioneers PANSY DIVISION, believes that AC/DC’s lyrics serve as a backdrop to the music’s attitude and storytelling rather than being the focal point. By reimagining the song’s lyrics, GAYC/DC adds their own flair of fun and attitude.
A favorite at their live performances, “Gay Boy Boogie” was destined for a studio recording, complete with a bold music video. Punk rock aficionado Frank Meyer, known for directing GAYC/DC’s previous video “Highway to Hell,” returned to helm this project. The “Highway to Hell” video featured appearances from notable artists like Johnny Martin (L.A. GUNS), John Bush (ARMORED SAINT, ex-ANTHRAX), and dUg Pinnick (KING’S X).
Drummer Brian Welch suggested creating a music video for “Bad Boy Boogie” due to its provocative lyrics, aligning with the band’s reputation for delivering R-rated live performances. Drawing inspiration from TWISTED SISTER’s iconic “We’re Not Gonna Take It” video, GAYC/DC and Meyer crafted a prequel to their previous video, integrating Johnny Martin to reprise his role as “Waldo.”
Describing their project as a tribute to TWISTED SISTER and the late music video director Marty Callner, GAYC/DC’s video adds a unique twist to familiar imagery. The casting decisions for the video were intentional, with Joanie Pimental and Don Speziale bringing specific characters to life.
TWISTED SISTER’s lead vocalist, Dee Snider, expressed his approval of GAYC/DC’s creative reinterpretation, underscoring the ethos of flattery through imitation. By blending their own representation with classic rock imagery, GAYC/DC celebrates their identity and pays homage to the bands and artists who have influenced them.
In essence, “Gay Boy Boogie” stands as a colorful and audacious celebration of LGBTQ+ expression within the realm of rock music, merging classic rock influences with a contemporary and inclusive perspective.
