After finding himself at the center of a controversial scandal involving allegations of sexual misconduct, 30-year-old vocalist Na Sanghyun from the indie group Band Nah initially admitted to the accusations before retracting his statement just days later. The controversy erupted when a post surfaced online detailing an incident where Na allegedly sexually harassed a woman during a private drinking gathering. According to the post, he supposedly pretended that the woman next to him was drunk and proceeded to touch her thigh, maintaining his hand there if she appeared intoxicated, but swiftly removing it if she reacted, claiming it was a mistake. However, due to the private nature of the incident, there was no concrete evidence available to substantiate the claims made in the post.

Following the online revelation, Na Sanghyun took to social media on May 23 to release a statement where he seemingly acknowledged the accusations and expressed remorse for his actions. In his statement, he apologized for causing harm to the person involved, despite his unclear recollection of the specific circumstances due to his drinking at the time. He also mentioned that he had previously reflected on his behavior and endeavored to address the issue with the help of those around him after instances of his drunken conduct were recognized about 3-4 years prior. Na Sanghyun emphasized his commitment to introspection, striving to prevent similar incidents from recurring in the future, and promised to uphold the values he holds dear through his actions.

The aftermath of his admission was swift, as Na resigned from his regular role on Wendy’s Young Street and was notably missing from the 17th Seoul Jazz Festival. Additionally, his team announced his absence from the upcoming Pentaport Rock Festival. Nevertheless, on June 2, his agency, January Music, issued a new statement that retracted the initial admission, asserting that the situation had been misconstrued. The agency clarified that the artist’s initial statement was based on moral responsibility and a lack of full verification of the facts. Upon further investigation, they determined that the incidents described in the post were false, and attributed the misleading wording to a period where Na was consuming more alcohol than usual while attempting to adjust his lifestyle habits.

January Music conveyed their intention to retain legal counsel and prepare a formal response as the situation developed. With the public’s gaze fixed on the unfolding events, the focus lies on whether the original claims will be substantiated or legally contested, a pattern which seems yet to be determined. The debacle surrounding Na Sanghyun’s sexual misconduct allegations underscores the complexities and challenges that arise when celebrities are embroiled in such controversies, shedding light on the blurred lines between public opinion and legal recourse.
