Aesop Rock’s latest album, “Black Hole Superette,” is a true gem in the realm of underground hip hop. Released on May 30 via Rhymesayers Entertainment, this album showcases Rock’s consistent brilliance and musical prowess. Taking a hands-on approach, Rock not only handled the production but also the songwriting and lyricism, resulting in a diverse collection of tracks that feature wicked cool samples and arrangements.

Collaborating with artists such as Armand Hammer, Open Mike Eagle, Homeboy Sandman & Lupe Fiasco, and Hanni El Khatib, Rock injects fresh perspectives and creativity into his already inventive tunes. While some tracks lean towards funky and jazzy vibes, others take on a more psychedelic and lo-fi feel. The album doesn’t mark a return to form for Rock, as his music has always been virtuosic, but there is a sense of renewed energy and creativity present in “Black Hole Superette.”

As a long-time fan of Aesop Rock, I have a deep appreciation for his unique lyricism and beats. Since discovering his music during my freshman year of college, I have been captivated by his artistry. No one can match the depth and complexity of his lyrics, making him a standout artist in the industry. The support for Rock’s music is unwavering, and I am excited to see where his journey takes him next.

Among the standout tracks on “Black Hole Superette” is “Movie Night,” which showcases pristine beats and a funky vibe with an organ sample and rapid drums. “So Be It” featuring Open Mike Eagle impresses with its rapid pace and catchy chorus. The collaboration on “Charlie Horse” with Homeboy Sandman and Lupe Fiasco adds different dimensions to the song, highlighting each artist’s unique approach.

While Aesop Rock currently does not have any upcoming shows announced, I can attest to the incredible experience of seeing him perform live. Having attended his shows at venues such as Toad’s Place in New Haven and The Met in Pawtucket, I can confidently say that his live performances are not to be missed. Hopefully, he will embark on a tour soon and make a stop in the New England area.

In the meantime, I highly recommend giving “Black Hole Superette” a listen. It is a testament to Aesop Rock’s talent and contribution to the hip hop genre. The album is a fantastic display of creativity and artistry, solidifying Rock’s position as one of the best figures in the history of hip hop.
