everyone in the group cycling through the year, Alexander also runs the Heavy Metal Cycling Club. This club allows metalheads to cycle across London, ending up at breweries across Blackhorse Road. According to Alexander, starting the Heavy Metal Cycling Club was a way to keep the group connected year-round. Riding a bike, in his opinion, is not only a functional mode of transport but also a social activity that brings joy and freedom, making one feel young again.
The Heavy Metal Truants, as they are known, consist of a passionate group of 30 heavy metal fans who embark on this 150-mile journey annually. Their destination is the renowned rock festival in the East Midlands, Download Festival. The journey commenced at Big Penny Social near Blackhorse Road, and the group is scheduled to arrive at Download Festival on Friday, the 13th of June. The primary objective of this charity ride is to raise funds for four children’s charities, including Nordoff & Robbins, Teenage Cancer Trust, NSPCC, and Save The Children. The goal this year set by the Heavy Metal Truants is to reach £100,000, and as of now, they have already managed to raise an impressive £40,000.
Founded by Walthamstow resident Alexander Milnas and Iron Maiden manager Rob Smallwood in 2013, the Heavy Metal Truants have been supported by the generosity of metalheads, raising a substantial total of £1.5 million since their inception. Alexander emphasized in an interview the tight-knit community and family-like bond among heavy metal enthusiasts, stating that the heavy metal community provides a sense of belonging and support for many, making it more than just a genre of music.
Their journey will take them from Walthamstow to Milton Keynes, where they will camp overnight before continuing to Leicester on the second day. Finally, they will head to Download Festival in Donington Park on Friday. In addition to the charity ride to the festival, Alexander also facilitates the Heavy Metal Cycling Club, ensuring the group stays connected year-round. This club allows participants to cycle around London, culminating in visits to breweries in the Blackhorse Road area. Alexander views cycling not only as a mode of transportation but also as a social and enjoyable activity that brings a sense of freedom and nostalgia, making one feel youthful again.
