Indian rock band from Northeast makes history as first to appear on America’s Got Talent
Growing up in Gangtok, Sikkim, Girish and The Chronicles were heavily influenced by classic hard rock legends such as The Eagles and Guns N’ Roses, as well as local rock bands like CRAB and Still Waters. For the past 16 years, the band has stayed true to their roots in Western hard rock and metal, eschewing the mainstream music scene in India dominated by film music and Indian classical tunes.
Surprising even themselves, Girish and The Chronicles found themselves at America’s Got Talent Season 20, a monumental platform not typically associated with Indian rock bands. Their powerful rendition of Adele’s ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ in the audition round captivated both the audience and the judges, including Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Howie Mandel, and Mel B, who were stunned by the band’s performance of genuine hard rock.
Reflecting on their experience on the show, frontman Girish Pradhan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to showcase their music on a global stage. The band’s electrifying performance earned them a spot in the next round, earning accolades from the judges and fans alike. Howie Mandel commended their ability to bring an authentically American sound to the competition, praising the band’s unique approach.
Following their viral performance on America’s Got Talent, Girish and The Chronicles performed at The Piano Man in Bangalore, where their classic rock-inspired set delighted the audience. Frontman Girish’s dynamic vocals and the band’s nostalgic aesthetic transported the crowd back to the golden age of rock ‘n’ roll, with many attendees already dubbing them as potential AGT winners.
The band’s sudden rise to international fame was kickstarted when a producer from America’s Got Talent discovered Girish’s soundcheck video on Instagram. This unexpected opportunity allowed Girish and the band to pursue a path on AGT, breaking away from traditional Indian music stereotypes and showcasing their unique musical journey to a global audience.
Despite their upbringing surrounded by Nepali folk and classical music, Girish and Yogesh Pradhan gravitated towards the Northeast’s vibrant rock and metal scene. Their parents, Bimla and Shyam Pradhan, played significant roles in nurturing their musical talents, with Shyam serving as the band’s first manager, mentor, and financier. While rooted in their cultural heritage, Girish and The Chronicles are committed to sharing their authentic story through their music, challenging conventional notions of Indian musical identity.
