Established in 2012, the MMHOF has been dedicated to celebrating and commemorating the rich musical heritage of Memphis by honoring legendary artists from various genres. The 2025 additions reflect the kaleidoscope of musical styles that have emanated from Memphis, encompassing rock, soul, blues, jazz, rap, gospel, rockabilly, opera, folk, country, and beyond. This commitment to recognizing diverse talents has been at the core of the MMHOF’s ethos under the leadership of John Doyle, the executive director.

Despite already enshrining 106 esteemed individuals, Doyle emphasized the City of Memphis’s unwavering dedication to showcasing deserving figures and continuing to expand the illustrious list of inductees. The recently announced honorees represent a confluence of culture, talent, and unparalleled contributions to the world of music.

The distinguished class of 2025 includes trailblazers such as Art Gilliam, the pioneering African American journalist and broadcaster who altered the media landscape in Memphis. Cordell Jackson, affectionately known as “Rock ‘n’ Roll Granny,” defied conventions as a female musician and producer who made significant strides in the male-dominated music industry. Robert Johnson, the enigmatic blues legend shrouded in myth and mystery, left a lasting legacy despite his tragically short life.

Denise LaSalle, hailed as the “Queen of the Blues,” transcended musical boundaries and etched her name in the annals of soul and funk history. Wendy Moten, a versatile artist with global acclaim, captured hearts with her soulful voice and infectious melodies. Last but not least, Johnnie Taylor, the ‘Philosopher of Soul,’ masterfully navigated genres ranging from gospel to R&B, leaving an indelible mark on the musical landscape.

These luminaries will be celebrated during a grand induction ceremony on Thursday, September 25, at the prestigious Cannon Center for the Performing Arts, highlighting their remarkable contributions to the world of music. Attendees can secure tickets for the event through Ticketmaster, ensuring a memorable evening filled with tribute, music, and the enduring spirit of Memphis.
