U.S. Maple’s debut album, “Long Hair In Three Stages,” is set to be re-released by SKiN GRAFT Records on colored vinyl for the first time, complete with updated packaging that includes a two-sided footlong obi strip, a lyric sheet, and a unique “untethered Rosetta Stone.” The band’s long-lost music video for the track “The State Is Bad,” shot in 1995, will also be unveiled officially after floating in obscurity on YouTube for years.

Vocalist Al Johnson revealed that the video was filmed in an elevator at a warehouse on Grand Avenue, a choice of location that reflects the band’s origins. U.S. Maple originated in Chicago near the intersection of Grand and Western Avenues in early 1995, laying the groundwork for their distinctive, fractured version of rock and roll.

Director Andrew Dryer, known for his work on videos for Shorty and Melt-Banana, led the production of the video. He utilized 3/4″ video technology from 1996, opting for its unique qualities over film due to cost constraints. Mark Fischer of SKiN GRAFT Records, initially mistaken about the video’s location, shared his memories of the band’s early days and the locations they frequented.

Guitarist Todd Rittmann clarified that the video was shot entirely in the service elevator of an industrial loft, now likely converted into luxury condos. Rittmann praised Dryer’s professionalism and efficiency during the shoot, despite some nervous energy among the band members.

The reissue of “Long Hair In Three Stages” includes a bonus track, “Found A Place To Have My Kittens,” previously unavailable on CD or digital platforms. Recorded with Jim O’Rourke at Solid Sound Studios in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, this album marked O’Rourke’s initial foray into a rock band recording session. The record’s chaotic mix of erratic drums, distorted vocals, and discordant melodies established U.S. Maple’s unique sound, which was further solidified through extensive touring and a Peel Session for the BBC. The album was recognized by Alternative Press, landing at #85 on the publication’s list of the “90 Greatest Albums of the ’90s.”

This reissue offers fans the opportunity to experience the band’s groundbreaking debut album in its full, colored vinyl format. With the inclusion of previously unreleased tracks and a fresh look at the “The State Is Bad” music video, U.S. Maple’s influential contribution to the alternative rock landscape of the 90s is once again in the spotlight.
