Converge and Coalesce have announced the release of a live recording of their performance at CBGB in 1996 ahead of the benefit concerts for the late New York Hardcore Promoter, Rich Hall, this weekend. The album, containing fourteen songs, is now available digitally, with the 2XLP format available for pre-order. Proceeds from the album will go directly to the Hall family as a tribute to their friend Rich Hall, who played a crucial role in promoting their bands in the early days in New York City.

Converge’s frontman, Jacob Bannon, shared his reflections on the upcoming celebration for Rich Hall’s life and musical impact. He reminisced about the early 1990s when the metallic hardcore subgenre was emerging, noting the challenges their bands faced in establishing themselves in a scene that did not readily embrace their sound. Rich Hall’s support and dedication allowed these bands to break into New York City’s music scene, providing opportunities to perform in renowned venues like CBGB. Bannon described how Rich Hall not only became a promoter but also a cherished friend within the music community. He highlighted the impact Rich had on their careers and expressed his grief upon hearing of his passing.

In a personal tribute to Rich Hall, Bannon unearthed a cassette recording of their inaugural show at CBGB and reached out to Sean Ingram of Coalesce to collaborate on its release. The recording captures the raw energy and authenticity of both bands, symbolizing a significant moment in their musical journey made possible by Rich Hall’s support. After successfully digitizing and mastering the recording, the bands worked on the album’s design, with artwork that encapsulated the essence of the performance. While no visual footage exists, the chaotic and unfiltered nature of the audio invites listeners to envision the intensity of that winter day at CBGB.

The release of “Live at CBGB’s” stands as a powerful tribute to Rich Hall’s lasting influence on the underground music scene and serves as a heartfelt gesture of support for his family. Converge and Coalesce’s collaboration on this album honors the memory of a dear friend who played a pivotal role in their careers and the broader music community.
