Carson McHone revealed the upcoming release of her album ‘Pentimento’, set to debut on September 12th under Merge Records. Following three bustling years filled with activity, the Austin-based artist strived through a remarkable journey, settling in Canada, undertaking extensive tours, and issuing two EPs.

The essence of ‘Pentimento’ as a title, originating from the Italian term for “repentance,” embodies the essence of McHone’s new creations. Describing a faint trace of an antiquated painting beneath layers of fresh paint on a canvas, the album symbolizes the intricate and progressive nature of McHone’s latest production. Scripted in the arid landscapes of Texas and documented at the shores of Canada, ‘Pentimento’ marks McHone’s audacious fusion of various influences – from guitar rock to serene folk, poetic verses, and ambient recordings – fashioning a diverse soundscape.

Leading the charge is the album’s debut single, “Winter Breaking,” a mystical prelude that genuinely mirrors the collaborative spirit underpinning the project, as she elaborated in her statement. The melodic journey is complemented by a visual spectacle of ceramic artistry by Alejandra Almuelle.

McHone expressed, “This project has truly materialized as a communal enterprise. Initially rooted in a methodical arrangement of personal relics, it began to resonate as a call for collective efforts. Unveiling an initial collaborative recording session involving a sextet of musicians, the project organically extended its reach to encompass numerous artists across different disciplines. If my preceding album, ‘Still Life’, captured a static juncture, a moment of pause before a transition, then ‘Pentimento’ emerges as the rightful next phase. It pulsates with motion – across temporal and spatial dimensions, embodying diverse forms… It encapsulates an exploration of shadows, unpredicted impulses, apparent contradictions, and spirited playfulness. I’m delighted to unveil this to the world now. So, our expedition commences from the outset, with the very inception of the album: ‘Winter Breaking’.”

Crafted amidst the Texas wilderness and cultivated on the Canadian coastline, ‘Pentimento’ was nurtured alongside collaborators Colleen Coco Collins, Michael Cloud Duguay, Raha Javanfar, Steven Lambke, and Daniel Romano.

McHone is gearing up for a summer excursion across Europe with Daniel Romano in July. Dates for US and Canadian tours are forthcoming, with festivities including a special listening session and an interdisciplinary performance of ‘Pentimento’ at the In the Soil Arts Festival: Harvesting the Soil in St. Catharines, ON, on the date of the album’s launch, September 12. The Texan songstress will also host a month-long residency in her homeland in October, marking a celebratory homecoming.
