On August 15th, 1972, Deep Purple embarked on a three-night journey in Japan that culminated in the creation of the iconic live album, Made in Japan. Fans of the legendary rock band can now look forward to a brand-new Super Deluxe Edition of this groundbreaking release, set to hit the shelves on August 15th this year, a remarkable 53 years after the first concert recording.

The Made in Japan (Super Deluxe Edition) will feature a host of exciting new elements, including fresh stereo and Dolby ATMOS mixes of the original tracks meticulously crafted by famed producer Steven Wilson. Additionally, all three concerts recorded during the legendary performances have been newly remixed by Richard Digby Smith, providing fans with a unique listening experience. The collection will also include rare single edits, making it a must-have for any serious Deep Purple enthusiast.

This special edition will be available in a 5CD/Blu-ray set at retailers nationwide, as well as a 10LP black vinyl edition exclusively on deeppurple.com and Rhino.com for those looking to add a collector’s item to their arsenal. A 2LP black vinyl version of Steven Wilson’s remixes can also be snagged from select independent record stores, with different release dates for fans in the U.S., Canada, and Japan.

Initially intended as a release solely for Japanese fans, Made in Japan soon transcended borders to become a global sensation. With its platinum status in the United States and various European countries, this double live album quickly solidified its place in rock history.

The live energy and sheer musical prowess of the band’s Mk II lineup—featuring Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, and Ian Paice—are showcased on hits like Smoke On The Water, Highway Star, and Space Truckin’. Bassist Roger Glover reminisces about the magical experience of finding the faraway audience singing every word, underscoring the profound connection and raw passion that emanated from the band during those electrifying performances.

Engineer Martin Birch, renowned for his work on Deep Purple’s studio albums, was enlisted to capture these historic shows on eight-track tape at Festival Hall in Osaka and the Budokan in Tokyo. The resulting recordings featured songs from their then-new album Machine Head, as well as beloved classics such as Child In Time, Strange Kind Of Woman, and Speed King. The collection also includes rare single edits like the German version of Black Night and the Mexican edit of Space Truckin’, adding intriguing layers to an already exceptional body of work.

Made in Japan received critical acclaim upon its release, with Rolling Stone praising it as “Purple’s definitive metal monster” and ranking it at No. 6 on their list of the “10 Best Live Albums of All Time”. AllMusic also lauded the album, attributing Deep Purple as a pivotal force in shaping the heavy metal genre. Its commercial success further solidified the band’s position, with the album charting impressively at No. 6 on the Billboard 200.

Steven Wilson’s deft touch breathes new life into the original tape recordings, capturing the band’s raw power and unbridled energy with his stereo and Atmos mixes. Wilson affectionately reflects, “hopefully this new mix makes it feel even more like you’re there”, inviting fans to immerse themselves in the live concert experience like never before.

Made In Japan (Super Deluxe Edition) promises to be an unforgettable journey through rock history, delivering a meticulously curated collection that pays homage to Deep Purple’s unforgettable legacy. With its array of surprises and exclusive editions, this release is geared towards both die-hard fans and newcomers looking to explore the depths of one of rock music’s most iconic live albums.
