La mesmerizing band known as La Banda Chuska ignites an explosion of vibrant musical flavors in their latest album “Basic Bichos,” combining elements of psychedelic surf rock with the rhythmic beat of Peruvian cumbia.

“Basic Bichos” serves as an eclectic blend of genres, seamlessly fusing cumbia and surf with the rebellious spirit and raw intensity of garage-punk. By pooling together their talents, each band member contributed to the creation of ten tracks that offer a diverse yet cohesive listening experience. The album’s production features a dynamic mix of edgy guitars, infectious keyboard melodies (including accordion, synth, and Farfisa), and vocals that effortlessly shift between polished pop and moments of chaotic release.

While “Basic Bichos” continues to embody the band’s signature joyous and dance-worthy sound, it also delves into deeper themes through its music. The album showcases four animal-themed tracks, with standout songs like “El Bagre,” a satirical take on artists in New York City relying on the wealthy. In “Ratas y Mapaches,” rats and raccoons humorously claim the true ownership of NYC real estate. Additionally, the record explores topics such as accepting one’s dark side (“Bailando con mi Oscuridad”) and real-life survival (“La Selva Me Salvó”). Tracks like “Mansplayner” offer a critical view of performative masculinity, encapsulated in the line “El que habla más tiene más que esconder” (“He who talks the most has the most to hide”).

The album was recorded live to tape by band members and producers Adele Fournet and Felipe Wurst, with Wurst primarily handling the mixing and additional mixing by Charlie Scovall on two tracks. The mastering was skillfully done by Frankie Sunswept, with accompanying music videos for “La Selva Me Salvó” (directed by Matthew Williams) and “Ratas y Mapaches” (directed by Brett Burton).

In conclusion, “Basic Bichos” by La Banda Chuska stands as a testament to the band’s ability to push boundaries and seamlessly blend genres to create a unique and captivating musical experience. With its infectious energy, thought-provoking themes, and expertly crafted production, this album is a must-listen for fans of alternative music, psychedelic rock, surf rock, and cumbia.
