New Canadian Patriots: Allegories, Majors, Original Pairs, and More
One of the things that always leaves me frustrated is when a Canadian musical act or their representatives opt to hire a foreign publicist to promote their work to Canadian media outlets. This is even more disheartening when these individuals, often reliant on government funding to cover public relations expenses, choose to employ U.K. publicists, the majority of whom are considered untrustworthy. A recent case involved a jazz fusion group from Toronto seeking coverage for their new album. However, due to this disloyalty to Canadian talent, they will not receive any attention from me. Instead, I would rather shine a spotlight on the remarkable new music and videos from talented Canadian artists who have approached me through local publicists.
Allegories, an experimental indie-pop duo, has made a remarkable comeback with their latest single Dreamcrusher. The song delves into themes of ambition, disillusionment, and creative rejuvenation. What began as a simple ukulele sketch transformed into a dreamy and ethereal track through Allegories’ unconventional creative process. The result is a piece that beautifully encompasses the destruction of dreams while also celebrating the growth that emerges in their place.
Etiquette, the latest single by Ottawa pop-punk band Majors, takes a playful jab at the concept of golf course etiquette. Through a creative collaboration with Juno-winning cinematographer Peter Schnobb, the band brings a high-energy visual representation to the song. Majors injects their signature blend of punk energy and unexpected thematic twists into the music, providing a refreshing take on everyday experiences.
Original Pairs from Toronto deliver a raw and defiant anthem in Star Guitar, paying homage to the spirit of DIY and the love for rock ‘n’ roll. Their track captures the essence of a storied venue’s final days, embodying a sense of nostalgia and resilience. Recorded live off the floor, the band embraced unexpected moments that added depth and character to their music, resulting in a unique and memorable piece.
The Dears mark their new signing with Next Door Records by sharing Babe, We’ll Find A Way, a powerful and emotive single. Singer-guitarist Murray Lightburn’s poignant lyrics and melodies draw listeners into a world of vivid emotions and inner strength. The track serves as a reminder of the determination that drives us forward, even in the face of adversity.
Patrick Watson and Maro’s collaboration on The Wandering offers a haunting and atmospheric experience. The track, set to be featured on Watson’s upcoming album Uh Oh, showcases a mesmerizing duet of wordless harmonies and captivating instrumentation. Through the evocative video directed by Jacob Jonas, the artists invite listeners to embark on a journey filled with introspection and contemplation.
