Ben Kweller has recently unveiled his long-awaited album, ‘Cover The Mirrors,’ marking his return to the music scene following the untimely loss of his 16-year-old son, Dorian Zev, in 2023. The release is accompanied by the single “Oh Dorian (Feat. MJ Lenderman),” which provides a unique perspective on mourning. Infused with a nostalgic Sixties feel, this track featuring MJ Lenderman focuses more on memories rather than grief.

“I took the approach of: I’m actually talking to a really great friend I haven’t seen in a while — and I can’t wait to hang out again,” Kweller reveals. He explains that the song is meant for Dorian’s high school friends who still visit his grave, emphasizing that his son is not truly gone but waiting to be seen again.

Marking his seventh studio album, ‘Cover The Mirrors,’ dropping through The Noise Company, coincides with what would have been Dorian’s 19th birthday. The album was preceded by singles such as “Optimystic,” “Dollar Store (Feat. Waxahatchee),” “Depression (Feat. Coconut Records),” and “Killer Bee (Feat. The Flaming Lips).”

Known for his candid lyricism and ability to transport listeners to various emotional landscapes, Kweller’s latest 12-track album shows him navigating the profound grief he has experienced with a newfound sense of determination and clarity. Recorded in October 2024 at NoiseCo Studio in Dripping Springs, TX, the album features contributions from his tour band members Chris Mintz-Plasse (bass) and Ryan Dean (drums).

Despite the immense sorrow that has accompanied him since Dorian’s passing, Kweller’s openness about his journey through grief has resonated with audiences globally. With ‘Cover the Mirrors,’ Ben Kweller channels this well of emotions into his music, providing listeners with a glimpse of his artistic brilliance during this challenging period.

Reflecting on the album, Kweller describes it as his most personal and emotionally raw work to date. He expresses, “When Dorian died in 2023, I was overwhelmed with the urge to create music. It was my way to find solace amidst my profound grief. In the depths of sorrow, I discovered a newfound layer of understanding – my highs are higher, my lows are lower, my love is deeper, and my calling is stronger.”

‘Cover The Mirrors’ serves as a testament to Kweller’s journey through pain, showcasing his resilience and honesty as he translates his experiences into a mesmerizing collection of songs that capture the essence of his emotional turmoil and healing process.
