Review of JACK BRUCE’s “Harmony Row” Expanded Boxset with 2 CDs and 2 Blu-rays

Jack Bruce, the Glasgow native, grew up amidst the tenements of Harmony Row, a historical neighborhood on the south bank of the Clyde River. Although these tenements and Bruce himself are no longer present, his music continues to resonate. His partnership with lyricist Pete Brown, known for his vast portfolio of poetry and prose and passion for British beat poetry, began during the Cream era, resulting in hits such as ‘I Feel Free,’ ‘White Room,’ and ‘Sunshine Of Your Love,’ a collaboration that extended into Bruce’s solo career.

This 4 CD set, described as the “definitive version” of Harmony Row, showcases Bruce’s departure from his Cream sound and delves into his Proggy-Jazzy musical inclinations. Many tracks feature Bruce solely on piano, singing Brown’s unconventional and sometimes irreverent lyrics, akin to Genesis at times. Chris Spedding delivers subtle guitar lines, while John Marshall provides percussion; however, the album undeniably belongs to Bruce. Tracks like the elegant ‘Folk Song’ and the Latin-infused ‘Consul At Sunset’ stand out, but the entire album holds its own. Praised on major music sites, Harmony Row continues to captivate listeners.

This boxset edition comprises the original remastered album with bonus tracks on CD1, the original album in new stereo mixes by sound engineer Stephen W. Taylor along with bonus tracks on CD2, and both 96 kHz / 24-bit 5.1 Surround Sound & stereo mixes retooled by Taylor on DVD 3 and DVD 4. Additionally, it includes performances by Jack Bruce and Friends on Granada TV in 1971 as well as tracks from the WDR TV program in 1972. A comprehensive collection that provides a fitting tribute to a deserving album.

As Brian McGowan’s review suggests, this extensive edition of Harmony Row earns its five-star rating. Don’t miss out on experiencing the musical genius of Jack Bruce in this expanded 2 CD : 2 Blu-ray Boxset edition.
