New album “Sundae” by Angad Berar offers a fresh take on psychedelia during tranquil moments
Angad Berar’s latest album, “Sundae,” takes inspiration from the psychedelic rock of the 60s and 70s, krautrock, and Hindustani classical music to create a modern reinterpretation of the genre. Psychedelic rock, with its distorted guitars, tape loops, Eastern influences, and dreamlike sounds, emerged in the late 1960s, breaking traditional song structures and delving into introspective realms. Bands like Pink Floyd utilized these techniques to craft vast, emotive soundscapes, blending minimalism with dramatic crescendos in tracks like ‘Echoes’ and ‘Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.’
Angad Berar’s “Sundae” finds a home on Echodelick Records, a label founded by Jeff Ferguson that appreciates the tangible experience of vinyl listening. The album, Angad’s fourth and second full-band release, was co-produced with Kartik Pillai of Karuta Records. Composed over several years in various locations like Goa, Delhi, and Berlin, “Sundae” was brought to life in a 5-day recording session at Kartik’s studio in Faridabad.
For Angad, “Sundae” represents a creative evolution, showcasing his exploration of full-band composition and a deeper grasp of groove and texture. Collaborating as a co-producer for the first time, Angad describes the process as steering heavy machinery at high altitudes. The music of “Sundae” is influenced by driving rhythms and the refreshing energy of the Goan sea breeze, creating a unique sonic landscape.
The album opens with a serene acoustic track filled with bells and positivity. Tracks like ‘Jam 2’ and ‘Jam 6’ embody a sense of Floydian minimalism, while ‘Driving With You’ features Angad’s debut vocal performance. ‘Jam 4’ introduces Indian sounds and worldbeat rhythms, blending them with the vibrant essence of global psychedelia. Throughout the album, elements of grunge and distortion emerge, culminating in the atmospheric ambient soundscape of ‘Jam 7’ that closes the record.
“Sundae” draws on the essence of psychedelic rock, krautrock, and Hindustani classical music to offer a contemporary take on exploration, minimalism, and emotional depth. Angad’s reinterpretation infuses acoustic intimacy, world rhythms, and luminous ambient textures, creating a soundtrack suitable for long drives, cycling adventures, or moments that require steady progression. The album encapsulates a feeling like enjoying an ice cream on a sunny day.
