Rock climber rescued by helicopter following 60-foot fall on Mount Washington
Palm Springs is currently experiencing temperatures of 100 degrees, which are typical for this time of year but are expected to increase over the weekend.
A recent incident on Mount Washington in New Hampshire involved a rock climber who was rescued by a New Hampshire Army National Guard helicopter after falling about 60 feet. The rescue operation was initiated after a report came in around 1 p.m. regarding the climber’s fall in the Pinnacle Buttress area at the upper end of Huntington Ravine. According to Staff Sgt. Andy Morgan from the New Hampshire Army National Guard, this particular rescue was quite technical compared to others they had conducted.
Upon receiving the report of the fall, two other climbers in the vicinity quickly went to assist the injured climber, a man in his 30s from New Orleans, Louisiana, who had sustained severe injuries. The injured climber was perched precariously on a cliffside, making it challenging for the rescuers to reach him. The Army National Guard helicopter, equipped with new rescue gear, successfully hoisted the injured climber from the headwall of Huntington Ravine shortly after 3 p.m. According to Sgt. Matthew Holmes from New Hampshire Fish and Game, the decision to lift the climber without landing was crucial in ensuring a safe rescue operation.
Following the rescue, the injured climber received immediate medical treatment inside the helicopter and was then transported to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for further care. Although the extent of the climber’s injuries remains unknown, the severity was apparent based on the observations made by the volunteers at the scene. Sgt. Holmes emphasized that despite the incident not occurring in a particularly remote area, the altitude on Mount Washington made it extremely challenging to access, highlighting the critical role of the quick response in ensuring the climber’s survival.
The successful rescue operation was attributed to the collaborative efforts of the Army National Guard and the nearby climbers who played a crucial role in assisting the injured climber. The teamwork demonstrated during this operation underscored the importance of coordination and quick action in such emergency situations.
