Exploring the Music of Crow Black Chicken on RTE
Irish blues rock band Crow Black Chicken has recently unveiled their latest album, Ghost Dance, which is the group’s first release since 2016. Produced by Philip Magee and recorded at GAF Studios in Co. Tipperary, the album holds a special place for the band members as it symbolizes nearly a decade of growth, evolution, and a renewed focus on their live performances. Reflecting on this milestone, the band shared, “It’s been a long road, but getting back into the studio and having the chance to work with Philip Magee again has made it feel like the right time, almost full circle. We’re proud.”
Formed in 2009, Crow Black Chicken has garnered attention both at home and abroad. The band’s notable achievements include performances at BBC Introducing at Glastonbury in 2011, touring across Europe, releasing three studio albums, two live albums, and supporting renowned act ZZ Top in Cork back in 2016. With upcoming shows in various locations including Waterford, Clonmel, Romania, Armagh, and Westport, Crow Black Chicken is poised to captivate audiences with their signature blues-infused hard rock sound.
Drummer Gev Barret, a core member of the group, offers insights into the band’s musical journey and influences. When asked to describe their music, Barret explains that it is a fusion of blues and hard rock, drawing from a diverse range of genres. While he and bassist Stephen McGrath have roots in punk, grunge, and rock music, guitarist and vocalist Christy O’Hanlon brings a blues and folk tradition to the mix. This blend of musical backgrounds results in the distinctive sound that defines Crow Black Chicken.
Reflecting on his musical inspirations, Barret mentions bands like The Clash, Pearl Jam, Leonard Cohen, and artists such as Freddie King and Art Blakey. Emphasizing the importance of embracing diverse music genres, he highlights the band’s varied musical tastes as a key element in their creative process.
Recalling his earliest music experiences, Barret reminisces about attending Witness 2002, a music festival featuring iconic acts like The Prodigy, Foo Fighters, and Green Day. He shares that his first record purchase was The Prodigy’s “Fat of the Land” on cassette, a nostalgic nod to his musical beginnings. When asked about his current favorite song, Barret praises American folk/blues singer Chris Smither’s “Nobody Home” for its poignant depiction of contemporary issues.
Sharing his favorite lyric of all time from Dick Gaughan’s “Handful of Earth,” Barret delves into the powerful storytelling and social commentary within music. And in response to the hypothetical scenario of only being able to listen to one song for the rest of his life, he picks John Coltrane’s “Blue Train” – a timeless classic that resonates with him on a deep level.
