nt Petit to co-produce the album, marking a new collaboration for her. Petit, renowned for his work with Blick Bassy and Roseaux, brings a depth to the textures of the record while staying true to ALA.NI’s clear vision.
Born to parents from Grenada and raised in London, ALA.NI has a rich musical heritage, with her great-uncle being the cabaret icon Leslie ‘Hutch’ Hutchison. Since her debut album “You & I” in 2016, where she showcased beautifully restrained torch songs, she has made a mark with her unique style that defies easy categorization. Her follow-up album “ACCA” in 2020 layered beatbox and vocal textures into complex arrangements, featuring collaborations with the likes of LaKeith Stanfield and Iggy Pop, and garnered critical acclaim.
With Sunshine Music, ALA.NI delves into a range of emotions and themes, drawing from her experiences in the Caribbean and incorporating influences from calypso, jazz, bossa nova, and classic postwar music. The album is a tapestry of sound held together by her distinctive voice and artistic sensibilities, reflecting resilience and warmth while taking on issues like reparations, colonial theft, and personal growth. ALA.NI also weaves cautionary narratives about narcissism and survival into her songs, expanding beyond just personal tales.
The tracklist for Sunshine Music includes songs like “Seaweed,” “Summer Meadows,” “Something You Said,” and “Hey Moon,” among others. Each track adds a layer to the narrative that ALA.NI creates, capturing the essence of her experiences in the Caribbean and her reflections on life and love. The album is a blend of personal storytelling and political commentary, creating a unique listening experience for audiences.
Through this album, ALA.NI continues to push boundaries and explore new sounds while staying true to her roots and influences. Her music resonates with listeners, offering a blend of nostalgia, contemplation, and hope. Sunshine Music is set to release on September 19 via No Format Records, marking a new chapter in ALA.NI’s musical journey.
