La Dispute, the conceptual band known for their intricate and emotionally charged storytelling, has released Act 3 of their upcoming album No One Was Driving the Car. This album marks their first full-length release since 2019’s Panorama. The five new songs in Act 3 take listeners on a journey through the narrator’s life, starting from the very beginning. The narrative weaves through a musical landscape that encompasses all facets of the La Dispute universe, shifting seamlessly from moments of softness and delicacy to abrupt and crushing intensity.

Lead vocalist Jordan Dreyer sheds light on the thematic direction of Act 3, stating: “The next act delves into a more detailed reflection of the narrator’s past, starting at their shared home in the present day. The sense of detachment introduced in the first act slowly seeps outward, disrupting the comfort established in the preceding song. Through imagined self-portraits and sequences of time varying from fractions of days to years, the narrator reflects on key moments and events from their life. Four pivotal events from their past are intricately explored in the form of four distinct songs.”

Accompanying the release of Act 3 is a new music video for the track “Sibling Fistfight at Mom’s Fiftieth/The Unsound.” Directed, filmed, edited, and starring Dreyer himself, the video maintains the DIY ethos that La Dispute is known for. Each act of the album is being complemented by a documentary directed by Martin, adding another layer of depth and insight to the album’s creative process.

La Dispute’s continued dedication to storytelling and pushing the boundaries of their sonic landscape is evident in Act 3 of No One Was Driving the Car. Fans can expect a deeply introspective and emotionally resonant listening experience that invites them to dive into the complex and intricate world that the band has crafted. With Act 3 now available, anticipation continues to build for the full release of the album, promising even more layers of depth and nuance for listeners to explore and unravel.
