Nantwich care home making progress after receiving “inadequate” rating, according to CQC
St Catherine’s Care Home in Nantwich, which offers accommodation and nursing care to older individuals, some of whom have dementia, was previously rated as “inadequate” by the Care Quality Commission. This rating led to the home being placed under special measures to ensure the protection of its residents. During an inspection in October of the previous year, the home was found to be in breach of legal regulations in five key areas. These breaches related to safe care and treatment, safeguarding service users from abuse and improper treatment, meeting nutritional and hydration needs, staffing, and governance.
In a recent report published by the Care Quality Commission following a follow-up assessment that took place between April 29 and May 19, it was noted that there has been improvement at St Catherine’s Care Home. The overall rating has now been upgraded to “requires improvement,” one step above inadequate, indicating that the service is on a path towards better performance. The CQC has outlined areas where the home still needs to improve to meet the required standards.
The report highlighted that new managerial staff had been appointed to oversee operations and implement more effective governance systems. The provider, Park Homes (UK) Limited, was advised to ensure that ongoing improvements are maintained, particularly in terms of record-keeping, staff availability, and notification of certain events to the CQC.
Despite the previous shortcomings, positive feedback was received from residents of the care home. Many expressed contentment with their living situation, with statements such as “I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. It’s good here” and “overall I am very happy here, I can’t complain.” While some residents mentioned concerns about staff availability at certain times, they appreciated that staff knew them well and respected their choices. Additionally, residents noted improvements in the cleanliness of the building and the overall environment.
The Care Quality Commission’s latest assessment report acknowledges the progress made by St Catherine’s Care Home but also emphasizes the work that still needs to be done to ensure ongoing improvement. By addressing the areas highlighted by the CQC, the care home aims to provide a safe and comfortable living environment for its residents.
