The latest event that caught the eyes of many was the release of Tom Morello’s impactful video for his song, “Pretend You Remember Me.” In an interview with Billboard, Morello disclosed that the song was a direct response to the distressing scenario of mass agents separating families. The video commences with a clip of Leonard Peltier, a Native American activist who was handed two life sentences for the death of two FBI agents back in 1975. His sentence was later commuted by President Joe Biden to indefinite house arrest. Peltier opens the video with a powerful statement, “No human being is illegal,” emphasizing the idea that every part of the country is taken land, followed by footage portraying protests against ICE and press secretaries from various administrations.

Tom Morello shared his inspiration for the song, stating that though he supports the arrest of violent criminals, he emphasizes that justice should be prioritized for those involved in wars overseas rather than hard-working individuals seeking a decent life. In collaboration with the Coalition For Humane Immigrant Rights Los Angeles, a nonprofit serving the city’s immigrant community, Morello released the song hoping to shed light on the necessity for fairness and support for justice.

Despite his activism for noble causes, Morello faced backlash from David Draiman, the Disturbed frontman, for voicing support for the controversial Irish rap group, Kneecap. Praising the group as the contemporary equivalents of Rage Against The Machine in an interview, Morello’s remarks triggered Draiman’s ire due to his public support for Israel. The criticism, however, did not deter Morello, who deemed the timing of his music as appropriate after witnessing his songs echo the streets at Los Angeles ICE protests.

Amidst the criticisms and controversies surrounding his activism, Morello is preparing to release his debut solo rock album, eagerly anticipated to be launched next year. He shared insight into his album, mentioning that it would encompass the traditional Morello riffage while also incorporating a Springsteen-like vibe reminiscent of ‘Darkness On The Edge of Town.’ The uniqueness of his upcoming album lies within its blend of these contrasting musical elements, with “Pretend You Remember Me” found harmoniously in the middle.

For those eager to witness Morello’s distinctive sound live, keep an eye out for his upcoming tour dates!
