Cha Wa to Release New Album Titled “Rise Up”
The new album “Rise Up” by the two-time GRAMMY nominated New Orleans Funk Collective Cha Wa is set to be released on August 29, 2025. The album marks the band’s fourth release and follows their GRAMMY nominated album “My People” from 2021. “Rise Up” is a culmination of original R&B funk anthems that showcase the band’s evolution and musical growth. The lead single “Here We Come” pays tribute to the citizens of New Orleans, particularly the Mardi Gras Indian Tribes, Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs, and High School Marching Bands that are integral to the city’s culture.
Musical director and drummer, Joe Gelini, explains that the song blends infectious rhythms of the Mardi Gras Indian tambourine players with the marching band sousaphones to create a groovy and compelling sound. The vocals are delivered by the legendary Spyboy Honey Banister, recounting the story of masking Indians for fifty years. The lyrics emphasize the themes of rising up and paying homage to the city’s rich cultural heritage.
The album “Rise Up” is centered around the themes of rebirth and freedom, drawing inspiration from Mardi Gras Indian culture and the diverse culture of New Orleans. It tells authentic stories of the city and its people, touching on social justice movements, personal journeys, and various struggles and triumphs. Guest appearances on the album include Irma Thomas, John Boutte’, and guest keyboards by Roger Joseph Manning, adding layers of talent to the project.
Cha Wa’s latest album showcases the band’s growth and evolution, with a focus on elevating its singers and musicians to compelling songwriters. The album is produced, mixed, and mastered by Dave Trumfio, known for his work with Wilco, Jesus and Mary Chain, among others.
