Tommy DeCarlo holds a remarkable story within the annals of rock ‘n’ roll history. When Brad Delp, the original lead singer of Boston, tragically passed away in 2007, Tommy DeCarlo’s world changed thanks to his daughter’s guidance. Introducing him to the world of myspace.com, she encouraged him to share some songs from his favorite band on the platform, leading to a fateful suggestion by a devoted Boston fan. Subsequently, DeCarlo uploaded two video performances to an email address linked to the band. This marked the beginning of an incredible journey when Boston’s founding member and chief songwriter, Tom Scholz, extended an invitation to DeCarlo to perform at a benefit concert.

Transitioning from a job at Home Depot in Charlotte, N.C., to becoming Boston’s lead vocalist from 2008 to 2017, DeCarlo’s life experienced a meteoric rise. Looking back, the 60-year-old DeCarlo expressed profound gratitude, stating, “For me to go from Home Depot to doing what I’m doing now, I would have never guessed that in a million years.” He credited Tom Scholz for the opportunity that changed his life, emphasizing that without Scholz’s belief in him, he wouldn’t have had the chance to pursue his passion.

Regarding the future of Boston, DeCarlo acknowledged that, at 78 years old, Tom Scholz remains the sole authority on the band’s touring prospects. DeCarlo stressed that any future Boston tour would be impossible without Scholz’s involvement and creative direction. After Boston’s touring hiatus following four consecutive years on the road from 2014-17, DeCarlo delved into local performances alongside his son, Tommy DeCarlo Jr., a talented guitarist and keyboardist.

Transitioning from local shows to national performances took time but was driven by the enduring demand from fans to hear Boston’s iconic music. DeCarlo’s son became an integral part of the tour, showcasing his musical talent alongside his father. Performing Boston’s legendary hits such as “More than a Feeling,” “Peace of Mind,” “Don’t Look Back,” and “Something About You,” DeCarlo’s setlist always includes crowd favorite “Foreplay/Long Time,” evoking an enthusiastic response from audiences.

Sharing the stage with former Chicago lead singer Jason Scheff, whose stint with the band spanned from 1985 to 2016, DeCarlo highlighted the contrasting styles of Boston and Chicago’s classic rock music. Following Scheff’s performance with Chicago’s repertoire, DeCarlo brought his dynamic energy to the stage, ensuring that audience members left the show invigorated. With both artists presenting their unique musical styles, the concert promises an unforgettable experience for classic rock enthusiasts.

For those interested in witnessing this exceptional musical event, DeCarlo and Scheff will be performing at 7 p.m. on July 31 at the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center in Carmel. To discover more about this concert and other upcoming events, visit thecenterpresents.org.
