‘Stand Up for Wisbech’ song born from ‘outrage and anger’ set to debut at town’s Rock event
Residents of Wisbech have created a powerful protest anthem, Stand Up for Wisbech, to voice their opposition to the proposed incinerator in their town. This song, to be aired at the Rock Festival, showcases the community’s outrage and anger towards the decision that could significantly impact their lives without their input.
The anthem, spearheaded by campaign spokesman Mark Rosen, was brought to life by Isi Clarke of Grange Farm Studio in Emneth and Neil Cousins. The heartfelt lyrics of the song highlight the lack of consultation with the residents about the construction of one of the largest incinerators in Europe, just a stone’s throw away from homes and schools.
Mark expressed frustration over the unilateral decision-making process, emphasizing that the community was not given a say in such a monumental project. He pointed out the potential consequences of the incinerator, such as increased traffic from 400 heavy goods vehicles daily, which would further disrupt the town’s already congested roads.
Despite overwhelming opposition from the residents, the German energy-from-waste company MVV was granted permission to proceed with the incinerator project without considering the concerns of the local council or residents. Mark highlighted the impact this decision could have on the town’s economy, potentially leading to the loss of hundreds of jobs if major retailers pull back due to the incinerator’s proximity.
The anthem, born out of the community’s frustration and distrust towards the government, has gained traction online, resonating with many who share similar sentiments. Mark described the song as raw, grassroots, and politically neutral, yet emotionally charged, reflecting the collective voice of the town in response to the perceived injustice.
The premiere of Stand Up for Wisbech at the Rock Festival is anticipated to be a poignant moment, symbolizing the community’s resilience and unity in the face of adversity. This event serves as a platform to amplify the residents’ concerns and garner support for their cause, shining a spotlight on the need for greater transparency and accountability in decision-making processes that affect local communities.
Through music, Wisbech residents are uniting to stand up against an unjust decision that threatens their way of life and the future of their town. The protest anthem, a manifestation of their collective voice, serves as a rallying cry for change and a reminder that communities must come together to protect their interests and hold those in power accountable for their actions.
