New music releases from John Salvage, WICCANS, Velvet Snakes, and a preview of Sounds Like Detroit
Discovering new music and supporting local artists has never been more exciting than tuning into MI Local with host Jeff Milo on Detroit Public Radio 101.9 WDET. Each week, listeners are treated to a diverse array of tracks and artists that showcase the vibrant music scene in Detroit and surrounding areas.
One such artist making waves in the local music scene is Samuel Nalangira. Known for his unique blend of folk and world music, Nalangira is not only a musician but also a dancer and choreographer. His transcendent song, “Zagyenda,” will be featured on an upcoming episode of MI Local. Nalangira will also be performing at the Sounds Like Detroit showcase at Batch Brewing Company on August 14 alongside other talented artists.
Another artist on the rise is Hamtramck-based singer/songwriter John Salvage, who is using his platform to support causes he believes in. Salvage recently released a new single, “Break The Wall,” with all proceeds from purchased downloads going to NPR. Fans can catch Salvage live at the Polka Dot Bar on August 3, showcasing his folk and indie-Americana sound.
Ypsilanti is also a hub for talented musicians, with post-folk outfit Little Traps releasing their new album, “Regular Love.” The title track from the album was featured on a recent episode of MI Local, and the band will be celebrating with a release party in Dexter on August 1.
Listeners of MI Local were also treated to some psychedelic-witchy rock from WICCANS and groovily-sludgy tracks from The Velvet Snakes. Both bands have recently released new albums, with The Velvet Snakes hosting a release party at Ziggy’s. The playlist for the episode featured a mix of genres and styles, including indie-folk-pop, neo-soul, and R&B, showcasing the diversity of talent in the local music scene.
