Exclusive Video Premiere: Kissing Other People
The indie-folk trio known as kissing other ppl are showcasing their musical talents in a vibrant new video for their rendition of Stella Lennon’s breakup track, “Kissing Other People”. This exclusive premiere on Tinnitist provides a behind-the-scenes look at the group’s creative process and unique approach to music.
Rachel Baiman, along with Viv & Riley, form this new trio and have chosen “Kissing Other People” as their third single and title track for their debut album. Their collaboration came about naturally, with Riley Calcagno recalling how their shared musical tastes inspired them to create a cohesive record of covers that span different genres and time periods.
In their version of “Kissing Other People,” kissing other ppl strips away the lush pop instrumentation of the original and replaces it with a stripped-down indie-folk arrangement. Featuring Baiman’s acoustic guitar, Riley’s banjo, and Vivian Leva’s fiddle, the trio takes the song in a fresh direction. This arrangement allows Baiman’s vocals to shine while adding sincerity to the bittersweet lyrics about moving on and kissing other people.
The video for the track was shot by the band and producer Greg Griffith, capturing the trio as they perform in a ’70s-style swimming pool setting. The lighthearted, playful visuals complement the soothing nature of the song, creating a harmonious blend of music and visuals.
The concept of kissing other ppl began when Viv & Riley provided musical backing for Baiman on tour. Sharing their favorite pop songs and experimenting with different musical styles led to the formation of this new group. Baiman praises her bandmates’ deep roots in old-time music, innovative approach to instrumentation, and nuanced vocal abilities.
In the recording process, kissing other ppl embraced experimentation and spontaneity, often recording in unconventional spaces like a 1960s bomb shelter for natural reverb. Producer Greg Griffith’s lo-fi recording techniques and vintage equipment added a sense of authenticity and imperfection to the record. The band’s willingness to take risks and try new things resulted in a dynamic indie-rock sound with traditional folk elements.
The collaborative spirit of the sessions fostered a sense of curiosity and exploration, allowing the group to discover new sounds and textures. Using toy instruments, unconventional recording techniques, and a playful attitude, kissing other ppl created a record that reflects their creative energy and musical chemistry.
As the band prepares for their upcoming tour dates, including stops in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, fans can look forward to experiencing their unique blend of indie-folk music live.
