The production of a new film set in Estonia in the 1980s is rapidly coming to a close in Ida-Viru County. Titled “Musta pori näkku,” the movie is an adaptation of Mihkel Raud’s novel of the same name, following the journey of a young heavy metal band striving to participate in the iconic Võru rock festival within the late 1980s Estonian setting.

The primary filming is currently in progress in Iisaku, located around 30 kilometers south of Jõhvi and en route to the northern shores of Peipsi Lake. Acclaimed director Jaak Kilmi, who has prior experience with films set in the 1980s era when Estonia was still under Soviet rule, is at the helm of this production. The authenticity of shooting period films from that era has become increasingly challenging due to the scarcity of genuine locations in Estonia. Therefore, the Iisaku song stage was chosen as a suitable double for the actual Võru stage, as the original stage was situated much farther south.

Director Jaak Kilmi emphasized the significance of the performance scene in the film, as it serves as the climax of the storyline—a pivotal moment when the legendary Golem takes the stage, triggering a series of events. Boasting a budget of €1.6 million, the film aims to appeal to a broad audience and secure repeat viewers. Producer Kristian Taska emphasized the importance of meticulous planning and attention to detail in filmmaking to ensure the lasting impact and quality of the film.

The adaptation of “Musta pori näkku” from a beloved Estonian classic novel contributes to the familiarity of the characters and storyline among audiences, further enhancing the film’s appeal. Actor Erik Hermaküla, portraying the character of Hendrik Sal-Saller, expressed his enthusiasm for the role and the opportunity to embody the essence and energy of the character, drawing inspiration from the real-life persona. As the filming enters its final stages, director Jaak Kilmi anticipates the premiere of “Musta pori näkku” in cinemas next year, marking the conclusion of this captivating journey.

“Musta pori näkku” is one of several feature films currently in production in Estonia, adding to the vibrant and diverse film industry of the region. This film, set in the nostalgic ambiance of 1980s Estonia, promises an immersive cinematic experience that captures the essence of a bygone era and the enduring spirit of artistic expression.
