Guitarist Jake Kiszka of Greta Van Fleet was taken aback by the overwhelming response of 10,000 fans at Mirador’s first performance, a collaboration with blues musician Chris Turpin. Weaned on blues and raised on rock ‘n’ roll, Kiszka and Turpin joined forces to create Mirador’s stunning debut album, where Kiszka shares the story of how it all came together successfully.

When it came to naming their band, Kiszka and Turpin struggled to find the perfect moniker. After much brainstorming and debate, Kiszka proposed the name Marauder to Turpin, who enthusiastically agreed. However, a spelling error resulted in the name Mirador, meaning a vista, or viewpoint suspended in a high place, which they found fitting. With Kiszka looking East for influences and Turpin to the West, the name Mirador turned out to be a reflection of their collaborative spirit.

The genesis of Mirador dates back to 2018 when Ida Mae opened for Greta Van Fleet during a series of shows in Detroit. Kiszka was captivated by Ida Mae’s unique blend of blues, worldly music, and folk elements, which led to a strong connection with Turpin. Mutual admiration bloomed into friendship, evolving further when Ida Mae toured with Greta Van Fleet as openers, giving way to backstage jam sessions and collaborative songwriting between Kiszka and Turpin.

As the duo decided to formalize their collaboration by establishing Mirador as a band, they enlisted the talents of Mikey Sorbello on drums and Nick Pini on bass and keyboards to complete the lineup. With Greta Van Fleet’s extensive 2023 Starcatcher world tour looming on the horizon, Kiszka devised a clever plan to have Mirador open for Greta, ensuring a strong start for the new band despite potential challenges.

Kiszka reflects on the coexistence of Mirador and Greta Van Fleet, mentioning how the camaraderie among band members serves as a steady anchor despite pursuing side projects. The band’s tight bond and shared history ensure a seamless transition for Kiszka as he balances his commitments between Mirador and Greta Van Fleet.

With a promising future ahead, Mirador’s emergence on the music scene paints a hopeful picture for the band’s creative journey and continued success. Joined by a group of talented musicians, Kiszka and Turpin’s collaboration sets a strong foundation for Mirador’s unique sound and artistic vision, showcasing their shared passion for music and mutual respect for each other’s unique influences and creativity.
